WHV IS OREGON BEHIND?
Loyal citizens f'f Oregon are
deeply mortified when they scan
the U S census tables that toll iu
cold figures that duiiug the past
lation in Oregon has been less
ihun in California on our south,
or in Washington on our north,
all three states having the Paci
bo ocean for their western
boundaries. If in their chagrin
they should afck some explana
tion of the men who have ha.)
control of Oregou for the paet
thirty or forty years should not
be wondered at.
The population of our neigh
boring stdte on the south, Cali
fornia, with its 156,172 equare
miles of land surface, iu 1390
was 1,208,130 and in 1000 it was
1,485,053, showing a gain iu th
ten years in people of 276,92;, a
gain of 1.77 pereous per equare
mile of iU land surface.
The state of Washington oh
our uoith, with its 09,180 square
miles of land surface, had 319,
3iC people in 1890, and 518,103
in 1900, a giu in the ten yeaia
of 168,713 people beiug an ad
dition of 2 43 persons to each
square mile ot laud.
Oregou has a land surface of
95,560 square miles, and in
1890 bad a population of 313,-
767 and iu 1900 there were 413,
536 people iu Oregon, a gain iu
ihe ten years of 09,769, tue in
crease for the teu yean, being
1.65 per square mile of laud
being .22 of a person has than
California's increase, and .88
less than the increase of Wash
ington.
If climate is sought as an ex
planation, it (ails because Oregon
is sandwiched betweeu Califor
nia aud Washing both of which
have grown iu people faster
than Oregon. There ia no
more wiiste laud in Oregou thaii
eithei California or Washington
iu proportion to area.
A careful investigation will
loubtlesi disclose the reason
why Oregon is not keeping pace
with its neighbors. 1st Oregon
practically has but one railway
coiupauy, and it has not given
to nearly fifty nine thousand
square miles of the 91.560 iquare
miles of the state's surface any
transportation accomodations
whatever. 2ud owing to the
success wuicu and praihr

MEAT CHEAP
But not Cheap Meat
Having purchased the Bock
& Thomas shops and also the
-lull Market,, we are in position,
with the three shops, to furnish
our patrons witn choice meats
at'a less price than if we had
only one shop. It is not our
intention lo raise the price of
nieaU, but it is our intention to
reduce the pric, aud thereby
hope to increase our trade.
A trial order will convince vou
of the assertion.
