Our youog readers, who know
much more about the present
wur between Japan and -Russia,
and the ability of these nations
to carry on war, than they doif
the last war of the United States
with England and of the relative
strength of our nation, as com
pared with Greet Britain, and
think that Rubsia is so badly j
whipped, and so weslfeened by
internal dissentious that she
must of 1 necessity accept any
terms Japan may prepare will
do well to review their history
lesson about the war of 1812-11
By so doing they will find
that the total population of .the
U S in 1810 two years before the
declaratiou of war wis 4,308,483
whites and 1,377,808 ; negroep,
mostly slaves. The public debt
at the commencement of th.
war was 153,173,217 a per-capita
loueptedness of f 12 33 to each
white person. In 1810 the im
ports of foreign goods were $11.
80 per capita couu'iog blacks
and whites and the eame year
the exports amounted to $9.22
per capita of the total popula
tion. It will thus I e seen that
in 1810 the interest on the
public debt which was a per
capita of .44 and foreign pur
chases paid for the goods Bold to
foreign countries paid for there
was a balance of $3.02 per capita
agaiust the whole population or
ia the aggregate a balance ou tbe
wroug sitle of the ledger for tbe
year of $21 ,864,440. Not a very
strong financial basis to go to
war on 'against the richest
nation ou earth.'
In adoition to' the poverty of
the countiy the neODle wore
divided in seutiment ea to the
propriety of going to war with
England. There was in most
states and especially in New
England a large and intelligent
opposition'to the war, President
MudiBon, it is said, was very re-
luctaut to make the proclama
tion for war afier congress had
declared for war. The literature
of the times had much to say
about "lirilieb Sympathizers"
and "Blue Liirht FedAraliaU"
person-- charged with aiding the
hnghsh by giving them such
aid and information as - thev
could.
Tke war waned frotu June
19th., 1812 to Deo l4th 1814.
Our operations on land, either
in futile attempts to invade
Canada, protect the western
border from the Indians, who
were allies of England, or in de
fending our Atlantic from block
adc or invasion, or in prevent
ing hoatile riils from Canada
may, to put it mildly, be geoer
alized at an almost unbroken
series of defeats.
Without attempting to give a
full list of tbe disasters our laud
forces sustained the following
are noted with the n quest that
our youug readers wilt examine
their histories for particulars
viz: Battle of Rsiu river, Hull's
surrender of Detroit, Massacre
of Garrison of Fort Dearborn,
(uow Chicago) battle of Queens
town, Frenctitowii, Fi Mims,
Fort Erie, Lundy Lane, Capture
of Wa hington city and burning
of public buil'lingg, blockade of
Chespeak Bay, battle at Prarie
de Chain and Chatauqua.
In spite of all the adverses
W6 met on the battle fields when
our commissioners met the di
plomats of Eugland at Ghent
they stood them off and the
treaty concluded there was as
favorable to us at Euttland or
pearly so. '
