TRADE WITH CHINA
There was iu session at
Portland, Oregon, a gathering of
leading business men, from the
states west of the Mississippi
styled The Trans-Mississippi
Congress. On Friday the lead
ing subject was the Chinese boy.
cott which came up ns a pre
amble aud resolutions which
read as follows:
"Where, American . trade with
China it suspended, and Amerioan
vessels ar nuable todiscbarge their
cargoes at I hiaeee porta and Hong
Kong because of the refusal of Chinese

reasons for the present boycott, and to
appoint a commission Ito investigate
and report to congress with recom
mendation for a oomprehensive.iffimi
gration law framed ,to remove all un
reasonable reetrictionH,lut to exclude
from the United State and our insular
possession all undesirable persons
from every country."
This acliou oy so lurge and
respectable a gathering of lead
ing men from the western part
cfthe United States shows the
importance which is attached to
the boycott of all kindsof Amer
ican goods by the people of
China. Am! as his is at pre

the following figuiesfroiq ollici-

in forming an opinion thereon.

ed to Chiua merchandise valued
at $5,862,426; making the) bal
ance of trade against us in 1894
of $11,272,602.
In 1903 our exports to China
amounted to $26,648,846, our
imports to Chin ft r. that year
f merchandise were valued at
$18,898,163, showing that in
'-bat year we bought more mer
:handis from Chioa than we
-old her by $7,750,6b3.
From our present, trade view
point it looks as though China
will lose more by this boycott
than the U S. The fact is the
expected growth of our trade
withChina has been disappoint
ing. In tbe ten years 1893 to
190iJ our exports to China in
creased from $3,900,457 to $18,-
893,163 while our imports grew
from $20,636,535 in 1893 to
$20,618,846 in 1903
There can hardly be a very
rapid growth of China's foreign
trade so loug as money is so
scarce in China as at present.
