Many newspapers and public
speakers are just now indulging
in hot air encomiums on the
"Independent Voter." In try
ing to find out what they mean
by n "independent voter", an
analysis of their editorials and
speeches shows that they mean
voter who takes their advice
and not that of "the other fellow",
j ,
ed by events as they occur in
the ceasless changes of time and
to make each charge tedound to
the benefit of the whole people
and keep our country growing
in material strength and wealth,
but to vote so that as we grow in
material things we will also ex
pand in appreciation of the
right so that the paramont pur
pose and highest ambition of
ever American shall be. "do
right in all things great and
mall, and submit no wroog."
RAILROAD ACCIDENTS
The eighteenth annual reporf
of the U 8 Inter-state Commerce
Commission for 1904, received
by the Observer a few days ago,

year ending June 30 1904, at
420 and 6,077 injured. At the
same time ttiere were 3,367 rail
road employees killed and 43,-
266 injured. The total of pass
engers and employers killed in
railroad' accidents during the
year ending June 30, 1904 is
given as 3,787 killed and 61,383
injured. These figures show
that there wet e 233 more persons

TWO PIECE SUITS

dice totally olivious,; and inde
pendent of all considerations of
the publio welfare. Such an
"independent voter" is a menace
to the prosperity of the nation
and slate.
All voters should be indepen
dent thinkers, and when they
cast their vote make it express
their individual conviction as to
the right or wrong, the wisdom
or folly of the proposition voted
upon' such are independent
voters in the highest sense, and
upon such oar country and

for its perpeturity, and the pros
perity of the people is assured.
To be a real independent
voter in the United States is one
that can independently form an
individual opinion as to nil
publio questions and have cour
age and will power to make his
vote express that opinion as his
best judgment of what is best to
do for all, not for a few.
To be such a voter in the
United States, it Oregon, Union
County or in his or her school
district on cannot be an idler
or a dullard of conscience, or
ndifferent to the responsibility
and duties pertinent to citizen
ship, but must industriously
search for facts, present existing
acts, all the facts that in the
aggregate constitutes that com
plex concatenation of interests,
and enormously big thing which
we Call our country. So as to
be able not only to vote intelli

The above shows a fearful
slaugliter and mangling of
people by railroads and suggests
that something ought to be done
to curtail the fearful wreckage of
human lives and bodies.
