RESULT OF BAD STATESMAN
SHIP
Oregon is a larger stAte than
Washington having an area of
land surface of 91.5G0 square
miles or 60,513,400 acres, while
Washington has but 60,880
square miles or 42,830,1:00 acres
Doth states are washed on their
western borders and join each
other being divided by the Col
ombia river and a anrveyor's
line with Oregon on the south
and Washington on the north.
Their climates are similar.;, if
there is any difference in the
fertility of the soil, that differ
ence is in favor of Oregon, as
evidenced from the fact, that in
the beginning ihci. Wnv st
tlement by the whites, the earlier
pioneers selected homes in the
part of the original Oregon
territory tjiat on subsequent di
visions remained under the
came of Oregon, A region was
cut otr from it on the north in
1853 and called Washington.
In 1850 the first U S census
. taken in Oregon, which then in-
eluded Oregon, Washington,
idano and part of Wyoming
and Montana, though there were
then no whiles in the parts now
; iucloded in I Jaho and the cut
off pkrts of Wyoming and Mon-
wna, then were 12,087 white
people in all Oregon. In 1800
the first U 8 census taken after
Washington ";j was organit$d it
had a population of 11,564
whites and Oregon 61,405, or
more than 4 times aa many
people as Washiogton.
Oregon became a state Feb.
14th 1859 and Washington Feb.
22nd 1839 or thirty years after
Oregon. The census taken in
1880 gave Washington a white
population of 74,791 and Oregon
174,281 whites at which census
Oregon had two and one third
times more people than Wash
; iugton from this period the tide
changed otd in 1890 Washing
ton had 84,207 more white people
in it than Oregon, and in the
last census taken in 1900 there
were 103,168 more white people
in Washington thau in Oregon
In 1880 there were 16,217
farms in Oregon having 4,214,
712 acresof which 62.2 per
cent wer cultivated. In 1P00
there were 25,837 farms in Ore
gon with aa acreage of 10,071,-
y23 of which 33 per cent were
cultivated.
In 18S0 there were 6,523
farms in Wabhingtou with
1,409,221 acres, of which 34.4
per cent were cultivated, and in
1900, there were 33,202 farms in
Washington of which 40 8 per
cent were cultivated .
In 1880 the value of all farm
property including land, build
ings, improvements, implements
and machinery, live stock on
farm and in the range, was $76i-
976,140, and in 1900 the same
were wouth $172,761, ',287 a eain
in the twenty years in the value
of all farm property in Oreeon
of $95,786,147.
In 1880 the value of propertv
in Washington wai $20,777,024
and in 1900 it was worth $144,-
U4U,547, a gain in twenty tears
. . .
oi 11X3,263,503.
uauiornia Had 88,603 more
farms in 190C thau in 1880.
Oregon 19,620 more and Wash
ington 28,943. ;
The above figurte comparing
wie growtn or Oregon with our
neighbors on the north and
south da not reflect much honor
on the management of Oreeon
the past quarter of a century nor
upon tne managers. ,
