Ccunoil July 28 A targe forest fire
is raging in the recently oreated forest
reserve a few miles east of thia place,
Tbe country e fleeted is on the head
waters of the East fork, Middle fork,
Cottonwood creek and Mill creek. ,
A dense clond of smoke was olweiv-
ed in that direction yesterday,' and at
night the eastern horizon wss lighted
op by the flames. .These shot up to
the tops of tbe pines and tbe monarohs
of the forest, wrapped in fire, stood
forth against the mountain back'
ground like greet tons bes.
A portion of tbe timbor land within
the fire area has been proved up on by
claimants who looated under tbe tim
ber and stone act. . but much is still
government property. There is an lav
mense body tf timber there and unless
tbe fire Is checked, great damage will
be occasioned . . " ' i
That section is filled with eheen and
there seems to be little doubt that the
fire originated from some neglected
earapfire of a herder. "

rested by Captain Bell of the score!
