We were informed yesterday

with the proposed electric rail

REFORM AT BUTTE
Butte seems to have . broken
the gambling ring beynud re
pair. ' For the first time in the
history of the big Montana
mining camp . every den has
been closed, and every effort to
reopen the game has been block
ed resolutely and effectively by
the police and courts. This
shows the fallacy of the claim
that antigambliDtr cosset
be enforced. ,
Not only can gambling games
be shut down, as has been shown
at Butte, as it was shown by
Prosecutor Barnbart here, but
every resort i where men are
robbed by vile women can be
closed just as tightly as the
officers desire. There are still
probably some quiet games and
there are undoubtedly many
such resorts in this city. Let
Mr Barnhart's good work go on
until he has made Spokane a
clean town. Review

There are great Wall street in
terests connected with that com
pany just as with the Equitable
and it is evideutly the desire of
President McCurdy to learn
whether any of these have had
a back door route to the cash box
which they might take at will
upon payment of commissions
and other forms of emolument
.It is not supposed any such
state of affairs exists there as has
been disclosed in the Equitable
but an overhauling will do it no
barm, while a clean bill of
health issued after such an in
vestigation would strengthen it
id public confidence. Statesman.
If Russia finds a revolution
on her hinds as a result of the
bad soup furnished the sailors
of her Biack sea, fleet, she can
reflect that her ancient enemy,
Britain, also suffered a terrible
disaster occasioned by an ap
parently trivial cause. The
great bepody rebellion of 1857
in India is sometimes called
''the revolt of the greased cart
ridge." A widespread unrest
was fanned into an outbreak by
the rumor that cartridges greas
ed with the fat of animals un
clean alike to Hindu and Ma
hometan had been served out to
the native soldiers, and the
priests alleged that this was an
attempt of the British govern
ment to force its soldiers to vio
late their religion. Thus was
started a revolution that cost
thousands of lives and nearly
lost Great Britain its Indian
empire, -the affair at Odessa
may go down in history as ''the
mutiny of the watery soup."
