"rYON'T TAKE INTEREST"
, In talking to a business , man
the other day about the national
mote for good roads that is 'now
tiring the peoplethroughotit
the United States he remarked
that "The move was a good one,
bat the farmers would not take
an interest in it nd nothing
would result from it. except
possible fat appropriation by
Congress for buncomb" Ilia
reply evinced the common 'sen
timent that the making of good
roads belonged exclusively to
farmers. This is an old falaoy
that has been discarded in near;
ly every civilized country in
the world, Except in the United
Sutes. The national Govern
ment, in sending oat members
of the U S Bureau of Good Road
Inquiry entertains no such idea
It is acting upon, and trying to
imbue the people with the idea
; (hat gdod roads benefit all class
es of the people, farmers, mer
chants, manufacturers, profes-
' sionals and laborers)' and there
fore all classes should share in
the cost of making and keeping
in repair the roads
It is no wonder that the
farmers will not take a lively
interest in goed road making
under a pian that ' make them
bear all the expense of road
' making and ' malntaing ' is
thrown upon them . vhen they
feel that every other vocation is
interested iti and directly or in
directly is benefited by good
roads, and correspondingly in
jured by bad ones.
The farmers will cheerfully
do their part in making good
roads. Let us ate what, that
part upon an equitable rating
according to the vahe of the
property they own would be.'
The total value of property
owned by all classes in the
United Statts iu 1900 was
placed by the U S Treasury De
partment at $91,300,000,000 of
which the fai mers owned $20,
514,001,838, not quite one quar
ter of the value of all property
owned iu the IT S.
When the state agne to the
proposition now made to them
' by the National Government.
"That good Muds are buoticial
Jo all, aud the expense of mak
ing them should, iu justice be
born by all, the farmers can be

The Far Eastern war seems
almost over and a severe lesson
it baa been to Russia. It basj
shown the ruling powers , that
the age of tyrany, superstition
and ignorance han paised away
forever; that the .-. nation which
would he great in war, as well
as in peace, must have an en
lightened government, where
free education goes hand in
hand with freedom of thoughi
and Conscience, safe-guarded by
a free press. Let as hope that
Russia's defeat will ' be the
meaus of emancipating her own
people from the baneful ' in
