La Grande will soon have
plenty of power, in fact r within
a very ihort lime there will be
more power on the market tban
there is a demand for. There
fore it it up to the citizens of
this city to interest manufactur
ers, and secure some sort of en
terprise which will furnish , a
market for the surplus power
and furnish employment to ad
ditional working people. If La
Grande becomes much of a city
there must be established with
in its boundaries some sort of
industry which will furnish con
stant work to a" considerable
number of wonmen.
La Grande people visiting the
Portland fair should remember
that the La Grande merchants
have just as good asPortland mer
chants, and stand ready to rect
ify and mistake, and in hun
dreds of other ways are able and
willing to accomodate you, and
that the Portland merchants
never saw you before and neve
expects to see you again, and
do , not care where, you came
from or where you are going,
and cares little whether jour
purchase proves satisfactory to
you or not. Stand by the home
merchant, he has stood by you
when you needed a friend.
A year ago, when the war in
the east was getting under way
the Russian navy stood third iu
the world's list, and that of
Japan seventh. Great Britain
and France were stronger, than
Russia on the sea, and Germany
the United States and Italy
were respectively the fourth,
fifth and sixth naval powers.
Russia's uavy had a tonnage of
447,000 tons, that of Japan 220,
000 tons. Japan's naval vic
tories, with the prizes she has
made, and Russia's losses will
reverse the relative position of
the belligerents as . sea powers,
reducing Russia far below the
United States and perhaps giv
ing Japan a stronger navy than
this country has.
