U S Coast Defense ;
Washington Jane BTbe general
staff of the army has recommended
tbe establishment of 'a System of submarine-
defenses for the ! coast. The
plan has been' approved by Lieutenant
General Chaffee and will be by him
submitted to oorigreae.
This fa one of tbe definite results of
the war In the far east, where torpedo
boats, both fixed and mobile, and Sub
marine minss played eiub an Import
ant part In tbe destruction of ships.
Tbe ne corps will, embrace 0000
offloere and men, who will be trained
in tbe specialized work of submarine
defense. It ie proposed that members
6f this oorps shall not only have charge
of torpedo1 outfits and' shore batterlee
that will ' protect the mine fields, but
they shall be charged with the care
and operation of public plants, search -ligbta
and other aocessoriee.
The estimated cost of equipping the
proposed submarine deff nse is $4,000,
000. This will provide for a fleet of
submarine torpedo-boats (or all tbe
principal harbors, search! gut equip
ment, wireless telegraphy outfits and
floating mlneo.
It la expeoted that the navy will i
enter an objection JLo the plan that a
fleet of submarines be constructed for
operation by tbe srmy. There is muah
jealooey between' the services over this
question and It is already apparent
that tbe eohome will not go through
without a fight.
