Change In Cabinet
Roosevelt Wednesday sathorixed the
announcement that Charles J Bona
parte of Baltimore wonld be appointed
secretary of the navy to succeed Paul
Morton, who earlier In the day stated
be would retire July 1st to go to New
York to take obarge of the plant for
the construction of the subway system
for operation in connection' with the
surface lines? The president also au
thorised the statement that no other
changes in the personnel of the cabinet
was likely to take place in the near
future. Secretary 8baw already bat
indicated bit intention of retiring from
the cabinet probably next February.
Rumors of the retirement of Attorney
General Moody bave been published,
but it it understood to be hit intention
now to continue in the cabinet for a
year and a half and perhaps longer. ,
To all except President Roossvelt's
closest advisers the announcement of
the selection of Mr Bonaparte as tbe
bead of tbe navy came at a distinct
surprise, although it bad been Jeter-
mined on by the president for 'some
time in anticipation of Mr Morton's
retirement. In all the gossip Mr Bona
parte baa nol been suggested at Mr
Morton' possible suooessor. For many
years Mr Bonaparte baa been an inti
mate friend of tba president. So great
Is Mr Roosevelt's confidence in blra
that on many matters of nationsl oon
oern be has sought hit advioe and
counsel.
Eminent as a lawyer and as a publi
sist, and a consistent advocate of civil
servioe reform, Mr Bonaparte bat not
been supposed to have more than an
aoademio in the navy, Io tbe 'Un
building of the navy, however, he (a
known to be in perfect aocord itb
the president and doubtless will carry
into effect the views of Mr Roosevelt
in tbe strengthening of the naval es-
tablirmnt. .
Mi ikiurton'a announcement of bis
x. t :;d retirement followed a confer
uoe with the presided t lestinc about
an hour. It bad been stated with au
thority that Mr Morton would retire
July 1, provided tbe president would
accept bis resignation from that date.
aod today's statement therefore, offi
cially confirms what baa been known
for several weeks. When he retires be
will have rounded out. exaotly one
year of cabinet life. He auoceeded Wil
liam H Moody of Massachusetts,, who
became attorney general.
