The superintendent of sehools
in Pbiladulphia has been gath
ering the statistics of cigarette
smoking among the boys in the
public schools of that ( ivy and
finds that 20,000 of them are
addicted to the h ibit. The es
timate is based on a positive re
port of more than 6,000 cases,
but even suppose that the figure
is cut in two, 10,000 boys in the
publio schools of Philadelphia
smokiug cigarettes will m ke
many a grown min stop to
think. , The use of tobacco is
very prevalent ai.d those who
have reached their majority in
sist that it does them no- barm
and aff irds tbe:n much plt'a-ur
atl of which to a oortain degree
is true, though exceis in that as
in everything else is dangerous.
There is, however, in no phase
or aspect of tho case any justi
fication for ten or twenty thou
sand bovs in the publio schools
even in eo large a city as Phila
delphia, to te smoking cigar
ette. In Indiana they have a
new law which abolishes the
cigarettes from the state alto
gether, and the Philadelphia
figures would seem to justify
this rather remarkable piece of
legislation. There is no g itting
away from the proposition that
a boy will be a great deal
better off for not using tobacco
In any form. It is a matter for
the parents to attend to, bat in
very many cases they seem un
able to regulate it.

Every one in the city abonld
organise, him or herself into a
rastling committee and ascer
tain if possible if anyone, in
their immediate - neighborhood
baa been missed by the census
enumerators.. The point-is, if
we can legitimately swell the
present number just a few we
will be classed in the 4000 class.
When it comes to ascertainiug
population, abroad, it is the
whole, numbers, that count, not
the fractions. To illustrate the
government census in 1900 gave
L Grande .2991, ame more
names would have clas3d us in
the 3000 list. It is quite pos
sible at tbiotime if we all took
an interest we will shine in (he
