The Good Road Convention
which is now in session at Pen
dleton will discuss the most im
portant subject now before the
American people. There is
much talk among the people
about the railroads, which is a
very important theme, but as
the common roads has much
mure to do with the ' home life
thought given tc
, them than to railroads.
Nearly all the freight drawn
on the railways of the United
States and a very considerable
proportions of the passengers
pass over the country road. The
idea of the importance of the
country roads to the people may
be had by remembering that in
1902 (the latest official figure
we have) there were 655,130,236
passengers carried on the rail
ways of the U S at an average
charge of two cents and three
one hundreths of a mill per
mile. In the same year the
railways carried 1,192,136,510
tens of freight at an average
rate of seven and three fifths
mills per mile. The out of
moviug a ton of freight per
mile over the common roudi in
the U S per mile ia estimated at
25 cents per ton per . mile or
thirty-three times as much as
the railroads charge. It is es
timated that freight can be haul
ed on good roads at one third
less then it can now be moved
on our present country roads. It
is to make this saving that the
Pendleton convention will con
sider. That is they are seeking
to save the people more than
one billion dollars annually.
The Chicago strike teems to
be as fall cf life as ever, but ' it
is apparent that the employers
are making headway jo getting
their business moved. More
men are constantly being put on
and, eo far aa tbe dispatches
show, the tide is running
against the strikers. The latter,
lowever,' announce' they are
confident of winnine and are
prepared to carry on the strag
gle aatil their terms are met.

The Croker family is having

in San Francisco consigned to
Kobe, Japan. They were made
in Germany and the shipment
gave rise to some agitation
among the authorities. When
the daptain cf the vessel by
which the shipmeut was to be
sent learned of its character he
refused to continue loading.
The vessel was British and the
captain reporting the matter to
the British consul. The latter
