Chss.0. Eeed was for many; years
jory commissioner for judge Bellinger
who no doubt bad great influence in
securing his appointment.
The removal of Mr Mathews simply
means that the department doea not
intend to leave euoh an important
office in the hands ol the friends of
some of those who are now under in
dictment, principally senator Mitchell
who secured Mr Mathews appoint
ment.
Coining lust at this time on the
eve of Judge Bellinger's death, which
war not probably known by the presi
dent at the time ol this appointment,
it makes considerable room foi specu
lation as to whether or not Judge
Bellinger's place will be immediate or
whether one of the California judges
will be colled to try the place. In
ease of temporal disa'.ility another
judge would be called but in a case ol
permanent removal as in tbia instance
just what the president will do remain
to be seen .
