NATURAL RESOURCES
' Do not forget that there will
be another - business men's
meeting at the Commercial Club
tomorrow evening. Let every
member of the clnb attend.
If you have a plan whereby
you think yoa can assist the
town or the county, do not be
backward about making it
known at the business men's
meeting tomorrow evening.
When you. wrote that' last
letter to that eastern friend, did
you think to ask them to stop
off in La Grande a day or two,
before visiting the fair?
. The resources of a country as
generally meant when talking
about them are its climate, soil
and mines. These, in their
prlmative oondition, yield tittle
or'nothing to supply the wants
of civilized man. It takes human
industry,directed by intelligence
to quicken into life the latent
resources of nature and make
them contribute to the wants of
man. b6tore this county was
touched by the magio wand of
intelligent industry its soil,
forests; mines, and water falls
wer the same as now, but they
contributed so little to hamau
wants by way of food, shelter
and clothing that no Indians
could permanently reside with
in the present borders of Union
county. When Mr Hunt the
partner of John Jacob Astor,the
first millionare in the U. S., 91
years ago last New Years day,
staggered ' into Grande Ronde
valley in astarving condition the
only food he could procure from
a small band of Shoshone In
dians was a starved sore backed
horse and a lauk dog. The In
dians were both ' to part' with
these for they did not' know
'where they could get food to re
place them, but being cold and
naked they chanced catching
jack rabbits to stave off starva
tion for the sake of a half worn
blanket or two to wrap about
their naked bodies. The na
tural resources of Grand Ronde
Valley were as good then as
now, but was untouched by in
telligent industry and therefore
dormant. Now not far from
20,000 people in Uniou county
dwell permanently in good
homes, comfortabpl clothed with
provisions so aboandant that all
have their tables loaded three
times each day with the whitest
of wheatea bread, - the fattest
aud juioest beef, pork or mutton
chickens, eggs, butter, milk,
suzar, fruits as lucious as that
which has won prises in inter
national competition at World's
fairs, and after this continuous
round of feasting there is to
spare enough products of this
alley to fill a long train of rail
cars each day and send it forth
to supply the wants of distant
Deonle. It took Hunts letter to
s
his partnsr in New York city
nearly a year to reaoh its desti
nation . Now our people set in
their Dleasaut homes, and read
by electrio lights generated by
the water falls that rushed un
used for thousands of years
news not six hours old ' from
New York, Wathington City
Europe, Asia, Africa and the
Philipine Islands. The dif
ference between now and then
marks the contrast between
savage ignorance and civilized
education, and shows what book
learn in ir and skill can do with !
natural resources and make
them contribute to human comfort.
