WE BUY MUCH SUGAR V
The people of the i 'United
States consume, or did inr 1993,
71.1 pounds, per .capita. ' The
maple trees of the - north, the
cain plantations " of the south,
and the beet fields of the west
are unabe thus far to meet - this
demand, la January 1905 the

512 pounds of sugar valued ,.' at
$6,936,859 for the seven months
ending with January our im .
ports of sugar reached 2,060,825
598 pounds valued at 144,497
037. There figures are ' taken
from lb a Monthy ; summary ' of
Commerce and Finance of, the
United States for January 1905
' The American sugar Industry
and Beet Sugar Gaiette of March
5, 1905 gives the estimated
amount of sugar afloat for , the
U S from foreign countries as
from Cuba and West Indies 45;
000 tons. Java 14.000 -tons.
Hawaii 40,000 tons, Peru 15,000
tons, total 114,030 tons.
There were 413,767 people in
Oregon in 1900. and calculating
that the increase of population
has beeu at the same ratio since
1900 that it was from 1890 to
19ou when the increase for the
ten yaara was 99,767, there are
now 479,176 people in Oregon
Estimating that the people of
this state consume, 5 per capita,
the lame quantity of sugar that
the whole papulation of the U S
did in 1903, the latest official
figures we have, whloh was 71. 1
pounds of sugar" per capita, it
will require 34,669,413 pounds
of sugar to supply Oregon a year
Does not these figures suzeeat
the need of a vast expansion 'of
the sugar industry in this . State
so that the labor that it takes to
proiuce the millions of ' pounds
of sugar used can be done on our
own farms. That our soil will
produce good sugar-beets has
been practically demonstrated
by the sugar , factory near this
city, and that beets oan be grown
with profit is ho longer a ques
tion with our farmers who have
beou growing them for years.;
The man who is waiting for
something to turn up will never
succeed in Oregon any more
than he has in other locations.
It takes activity and ambition to
get ahed, and the chances in
Oregon1 'for men with theBe
qualities are "numerous. ""Take
farming for instance; a small
capital' will give an earnest man
a good start and the rett ' comes
easily , Farm-lands are - not
held at such inflated prices out
here as in' the Eastern -'States,
and the man with one or two
thousand dollars can got a foot
bold that will lead to better
thrngs.-Oregon Booster. ,
