TAKING CENSUS OF OREGON
According to oar custom and
laws this is the year for taking
census of Oregon, and the var
ious State and., county . officials
to whom that work is assign sd
are now busy in the prelimin
aries of the task. This we . be
ieve will be the fifth census of
our state taken by state author -ity.and.we
indulge the hope
that the manner of its taking
and the resultant: information
gathered wiU be a great , im
provement on the four proceed-
.
To (ike a census that will be
ot luclical use, and assist, our
law makers, which includes
every voter, in, Oregon, to for
mulate just and equitable laws,
is a tremendous job. Unless
it is performed with intelligence
accuracy and uniformity
throughout the State, , it . had
better not be performed, and
the mouey it will cost applied to
some useful, purpose. In this
age, when economical questions
are paramount, it is absolutely
necessary that the law makers
and the Executives thereof
should kuow the number of the
people, their vocations, capital
employed and in what employed
and the results of the . combined
use of capital and labor, as ex
pressed in the money value
thereof.
A census to be of any practi-r
cal value, must of necessity be
rigidly inquistorial requiring
old maids to tell their , ages and
incomes; old men . to , divulge
their age and annual ? receipts,
and outlays. In fact' a census to
be of any use to our law makers
should present a complete pic
ture of our people and the work
they are engaged in ' and the
compenntion th"r rereiv there
for, and wliethtr that work is
carried on under sauitary, con
ditions or not, , and, numerous
nthes things including a clear
insight into corporation doiugs.
The census pages should .be a
practically accurate, rigorous
into which the law, ' makers or,
our executive officers can look
and see ' clearly how - Dreaent
. i
laws effect every interest or
class of our citizens, and , from
the facts therein presented have
the data for formulating uew
laws.
So far as the facts presented
by the foxptf r Oiegnn Q;HbU8es,
they included so liitlo. aud
omited so much that thev of-
forded little assistance, either, to
inquiring individuals or cou
cientions law makers; and but
(or the information contained
in the U S census, which is
taken once in ten years, all as-
certions as to the number of our
people, their vocations, pro
gress literacy aud the produce of
their farms, herd?, mines, forests
would be but vague guesses and
i 1:1 1.. .
musk meiy reoeiyea as me . ex
age rated statements of interest
ed parties.
It is important to the progress
of Oregon that the actual facts
and real conditions in Oregon
be gathered so that they may be
read by all men; but if the cen
sus new being taken baits and
does no give a full and practi
cal picture jof onr - State, people
and the vocations in which men
and women maka- their living
and accumulate something for
old age, or to engage in larger
Operations, then like its prede
cessors it will be of little value.
