For the seven months ending
with January 1905, the United
States : imported , from foreign
countries merchandise 'valued
at f 625,933,101, of this $479,588
380 worth was carried to ns in
steamships owned by foreigners
and $1,025,978 in foreign own
ed sailing vessels, making a
total ot our imports of $490,614,
358 worth of foreign merchan
dise brought to us in the seven
months in foreign owned ships.
During the same seven
months steamships belonging
to U S citizens brougnt to us
$83,981,984 worth of foreign
goods, and American owned
sailing vessels carried to us from
foreign lauds $5,072,787 worth
oj foreign merchandise.
In I860 the total United
States imports and exports by
sea were valued at $762,283,550
of which 66 9 per cent was car
ried irvships owned by citizens
of the United States. In 1903
our imports and rxports

brought us out 9.1 per cen.

items of livo interest in discus
sing plans for reviving our mer

freight bills of over $200,000,000
which we have been paying to
foreign ship owners for years.
