LET US GET BUSY
The fact that on Tuesday
evening six families, consisting
of about thirty people, arrived
in this city from Oklaboma,with
the intention of locating perma
nently in this city or valley,
goes to snow what iiiout from j
the outside, who have been for
tunate enough to learn of the
advantages which this valley
offers to the man with a family,
think of our representations. All
of these thirty people, consist
ing of all ages, from toltling
babes to matured men and wo
men, are of a class that forms
the backbone of the country,
hardy and industrious. News
of the splendid climate with
which this valley is blessed, to
gether with the belief in its fu
ture prosperity, have induced
these people to decide to locate
bere. If thirty arrive on one
train, it is certainly a good start,
but, with the proper amount of
energy exercised by the people
of this city and the valley, how
many more good and substan
tial citizens could be induced to
stop here and investigate the
prospects of this valley? At the
present time a stream of immi
gration is flowing from the At
lantic ocean to the fertile slopes
of the Pacific. The stream
passes through this city. Why
should we not go to work and
appropriate prt of this im
mense stream so as to make our
valley more populous and richer
Why not take advantage of tht
opportunity and takeout an ir
rigating ditch from this stream
of humanity so as to enrichen
and make more beautiful our
county? The productiveness of
the land in the Qrande Ronde
Valley is undisputable, and
where it is cultivated, it is made
"to blossom like the rose." Few
are ' the agricultural products
that can not be successfully
raised in this valley, but there
is room for more people of the
right elass. The only thing
needed is to have every acre of
its productive soil cultivated,
and, for this reason, we need
more solid, sound, homeseeking
people to assist in bringing out
its foil resources. The way to
do this is to get active; be up
aod doing. We should not "hide
our ligbiunJer a bushel," but
we should make it a point to
"let it so shine," by informing
people who do not know, that
they too may be benefited by
our knowledge. Resting secure
in the thought that We are gett
ing along nicely,, that we are
happy and that we are satisfied,
we think not ot attempting to
assist others on the outside ot
informing them concerning the
advantages this valley affords.
We ought to get busy; we ought
to advertise our growth and
prosperity to the whole world;
we ought to exert ourselves,
rouse from our apaihy and get
good peeple to assist in making
this valley a perfect garden spot,
for in this manner we will be
nefit ourselves as well as those
who locate here. It is a fact,
and one of which we should be
proud, that the class of people
who are settling in this valley
are good, substantial homeseek
ers. A majority of them bring
money witu mem tu iu6, ss
those who do not, bring with
them a determination to work
and make a home for themselv
es and family. This is the
ckss of people that makes coun
tries great, and this is the class
of people that we want.
The recent rains increased
the wealth of the valley by
many thousand dollars, yester
days snow storm put a few
more figures to the already fair
sized total. Let the good work
continue. .
