WE LEAD THE WORLD
The Monthly Summary of
Commerce and Finance of the
United States for January 1905,
reached the Observer direct
from the Department of Com
merce and Labor, by mail, on
Monday morning, a quarto
volume of 878 pages. From it
we learn what the average im
ports and experts of the principle
countries of the world per
month for the year 1903,
1904 for the period
is gratifying to note there from
that, as an exporter of domestio
produce for the seven months
ending Jan 1904 the United
States leads the world.
Thd figures give taken
from the latest available sourees
show that the exports of domes
tio produce from the United
States for the seven months
ending Jan 1904 were of the
value of $887,107,699 that of
the United Kingdom for the
same period being $864,119,286
The monthly exports from the
United States for 1904 were
valued at $126,729,671; from the
United Kingdom $126,314,184
and from Germany, that stands
third as an exporters, the
monthly average in 1904 was
$102,687,800; France stands
fourth as an exporter with a
monthly average value of ex
ports for 1904 of $71,980,800.
Mr. Bryan's indorsement of

The prison library is coins to
be a success.' Already many
books have been sent and others
have been offered. This is a
good cause and should receive
the assistance of those who have
books upon their shelves which
they feel would be serving a
better purpose if they were
where they would be accessable
to those who are confined in
the county prison .
Having captured a cartload of
maps, Marshal Oyama would re
ciprocate the kindly feeling for
him in the United States if ht
would send a few over , for inspection.
Russian military experts are
eminently correct in their opin
ion that Russia can win out if
she can gain control of the sea
and the Csar feels better.

u Watch the Votel" was the
slogan of the Deaver Republi
can during the Gubernatorial
contest But it would have
been better to have watched the
Legislator), which seems to
have leoked on the vote as the
very hut thing to be censidered
In France, where the country
roads are the best that have
been made in any country, after
a spell of rainy weather that
has rendered the soil too wet to
plow, the farmers employ this
time in hauling off their crops
enables them to put in time
that to the Oregon farmer is
dead loss.
Every little helps. As a de
monstration of this assersion we
would cite you to the La Grande
Creamery and the La Grande
Iron works. Almost anytime
one can see farmers unloading
cream cans or bring machinery
to the foundry to be repaired.
Each one of these trips means
more money placed in circula
tion. Each one of these plants
furnish employment to several
people and also assest in keeping
much money in the city and
valley which without , these
plants would go to other points
where such plants are in opera
tion. There is room here for
other desirable manufacturing
ndustries, and the citizens of
La Grande should not rest until
they have been secured. A
number of small industries will
benefit the town and county as
much as a single large one, and
the smaller ones are more easily
secured. We do not wish to be
considered as being averse to a
arge manufacturing plant but
we realize that when La Grande
is once known as home for small
industries, larger ones will then
oome with less effort.
Many little things result in a
arge total.
