New Portable Engine
Messrs Bolton & Bodmer, the La
Grande impliment dealers, yesterday
received from Portland a portable
gasoline engine which they have sold
to Mr Samuel Morris a rancher who
lives between Alicel and Imbler. Thia
engine is neai ana clean cut la ap
pearance, being fitted upon a frame
work of iron and steel with low and
broad wheels, and capable of being
driven over any ground where a wag
on could go. Tbe manner in which
the engine is constructed and made a
part of the frame for transportation
makes a person think at first appear
ance tbat it would not be ot very great
motive power, yet the power of tbe
engine is equal to that of sixteen
horses. Mr Morris took the engine to
his home yesterday afternoon, and
seates tbat be will use it for all sorts
of power that can be used on a farm.
Principally, be states, it will be used
tor pumping water, but besides this it
will be used (or sawing wood and
otber purposes ts the exigencies of
the case may deman I. This is the
first engine of tbe style tbat has ever
been brought into this city, and pro
bably tbe only one tbat has ever been
brought into the oounty. The gaso
line is lighted by a battery, and from
an electric spark.
' The meeting at tbe ME Church
last night waa a specially - successful
one. The interest was more manifest
than usual and several souls were won
to Christ. Esoh evening shows an in
crease in the interest and in the
amount ot good being accomplished
Tbe members of the church and Pas
tor Gillilan have reason to be well
pleased with tbe progress of the meet
ing tbe effects of which are far reach
ing and will be everlasting. Such an
awaking in tbe Methodist church in
thia city has not taken place for
many years. .The meetings will be
continued both afternoon and evening
