ARTISEN WELL NOW
DOWN 850 FEET
Mr D M Hunt who has been super
intending the driving of the artesian
well on the Tbomaa MeConnell farm
seven miles east of this eity, on the
Cove road.waa ia the oily Wednesday,
reporting that tbey were down 852
feet but were at a standstill, consider
ing abandoning for present and mov
ing the machine to Alicel and ainking
a well there. Mr Hunt etatea the
reason this well can not be driven to
a further depth profitably is from the
fact that it was started too small, be
ing only 6$ inches in diameter and by
reason of striking several itrataa of
quick rand, wbioh in many instance
revolted in the casing becoming fatt
ened and bad to bs reduced, until
now the pipe ia only four inches
Mr Hunt did not have charge of
the work until the well had been
driven O about 200 feet when it , was
abandoned until Mr Hunt . took;
charge and drove it to ita present
depths Mr Hunt states that in this
.formation it ia necessary to commence
a bole not lets than 7 inches, this
gives an opportunity for a aerica of
reductions as the different atrataa of
quicksand are encountered.
The company recently organised at
Alicel, and who have contracted with
Mr Hunt for sinking 1000 feet, are
considering whether or not it would
be advisable to sink the MoOonnell
well, which is now down 850 feet, at
far as possible, or commence a new
well large enough on the start to in
sure its depth to 1500 or 2000 feet.

HOr WATER
.Mr Hunt states that the water at
the' bottom , of , the MoConnell well
must bi quite hot as when it reaches
the top after passing through several
hundred feet of cold water it is still
milk warm and on a cold morning
the vapor will rise from it. '
While there is nothing surprising
about this,' inasmuoh as we have a
number of warm springs in the oounty
and aeveral very hot, especially the
Hot Lale.yet if nuder this valley lies
a large body ot hot artesian water it
will be a valuable discovery, 'for in
stance if a strong alow of hot water
could be secured at any depth. La
Grsade as .well as other oitiea . in. the
oounty oould be heated from tbesource
at a great saving in the cost over the
present system of wood and coal..
This MeConnell well develops this
Idea sufficiently to warrant a thorough
investigation R3gUterit;g thermometer
would iscertain how hot the water is
in this well and if aa wrm at the ap
pearances indicite, it would warran t
some capitalist or company in this
city to sink a well at an altitude suf
ficiently above the city that, in case
the venture proved successful, it could
be piped all over the city ., ior . heating
purposes, and would soon make the
parties rich, while the investment
would not t a large. It would possi
bly cost anywhere for f 2CX) to $5000to

matter whether the cost would be

financed.

The funeral was conducted by Rev.
J. Franklin Day, Pastor of the First

wherefore should I fast? Can 1 bring

Gerald was a stout healthy child un

was a bright happy child and the joy
