been ditec vered at Ceylon. The iaot ia
recorded in the report on the result
of the mineral survey in tba island,
just, issued, which states tbsl sam
ple supposed to be araninite, or pitch
blende, proves on complete analysis to
be a new mineral which ii prrpoaad to
dame "tborianito " Iu prinoipl con
stituent ia oxide ol thorium, of which
it contains 76:22 percent, an amount
far higher than that ot any mineral
known hitherto. Thori. which is used
in the manufacture oi inotndeecent
gss mantle, is ssafce and is a' present
chiefly extracted from the monszi'.e
sands of Brtiil. Thorianite, adds the
report, ia alro radioactive, and a foot
note to the report stat-s, on the au
thority of Sir William Riniaey, tba'
