WRESTLING WITH A GIANT
Under the above Caption the
Commercial Tribune of Cincin
nati. Ohio says;
In directing Commissioner
Garfield to proceed to an invest
igation of the Standard Oil
Company with especial refer
ence to its operations in Kansas
President Roosevelt is preparing
to wrftallfl with a cn'nnt onrnnm.
tion whose tentacles ' are in
every State, and whose course
has, hitherto, . been unchecked
and apparently uncbeckable
It is to be said of President
Roosevelt that he fears no man
and is trusted by the people of
the United States. When he is
fully equipped with facts and
figures if the Standard Oil com
bine is not completely thrown
with both shoulders touching
the mattress, it will not be for
lack of courage skill and the
most perfect intergrity of pur
pose on the part of the Presi
dent. It is claimed by the advocates
of the methods of the Standard
Oil Company that its principal
commodity was never so 'cheap
as it has been since the com
bine secured absolute control of
the output. It is so, in all pro
bability, and if the end justified
the means, but little could be
said against the combine. . But
its history is the his'ory of
wreck and ruin of men who
believed in the right to hold
arid control their private prop
erty for their own use and beue-
ht, to seek a market for their
commodities in their own way
and to deal .with the consumer
after their own fashion while
violating no law of city, State
or Nation-
'A recent refusal of an inde
pendent operator 4in Kansas
to sacrifice his oil wells and
holdings to the .Standard Oil
Company was followed by a
severe cut in the price of oil in
that State, and by a deliberate
and increase of freight rates
against him on the railways
owned or controlled by the'
great combine. The fight is
still on between the individual
and the corporation, with little
doubt of the outcome unless the
ong arm of the Federal Gov
ernment be interposed on behalf
of private rights and aeainst
public wrongs
It is interesting to note in
connection with the coutest to
begin against the Standard Oil
Company that it will be under
the immediate direction of an
Ohio man, Commissioner Gar
field and he will be the third
01) io man to go against the
monster corporation. Moonett
went up against it and went out
of office and so did Watson
both Attorneys General of Ohio
but neither had the strength
that will be back of the content
whioh President iRoosevelt has
undertaken and which Com-
miaeioner Garfield will conduct
In this fight, as in all pothers
he has pndertaken, the great
body of the people will be witb
the Presidsnt, knowing bis cour.
age and placing implicit faith
in his integrity of purpose
La Grande already enjoys a
large number of pay rolls, amd
we will have more before 1905
is numbered with the past.
Our natural conditions are
such that a very little effort on
our part should secure the estab
lishment of a cannery. We
grow the proiucts that would
keep a cannery busy each sea
son, the product of which has
an unlimited market. There
are also others, but we refer to
cherrie, pears, and peas.
