An abundance of hay .aud
beet pulp can odI - result in
Grande , Ronde being a sure
center for huyers of prime '. beef
and mutton. It has . been so
for years and will continue to be
so.
It is hard for Grand Ronders
to believe that the east is in the
midst of a hard winter, with
traffic of all kinds delayed and
30 below zero in many places.
Is that one of the reasons why
thousands are annually seeking
the west with its glorious clim
ate and wonderful possiblities
awaiting captol and population.
It is time the La Grande
Commercial Club was getting
up a iiuie steam and making
an effort to get up in front of
procession. The people expect
the Club to be the agressor in
all things intended to advance
the interests of the town and
county. It is capable of bring
ing about great things but it
can't do'much unless it works
up a little more pressure.
. It seems strange that in a
land where nature has furnished
the very best building" mateiial
that the streets, and county roads
should be allowed to continu3
in the present condition. The
road 'builders in this county are
like that man of whom the
Arkansas Traveler speakr, .who
would not mend his roof when
the weather was good, and
could'nt when it was raining
There is every indication that
La Grande will experience in
1905 the greatest building year
in the history of the town, ' The
new buildings will not be erect
ed as a matter of speculation,
but because there is a certain
and sure demand, In fact this
city has about reached that
point when a new family ar
rives it ia ueccessary for them
to remain at the hotel until a
dwelling can'be built Jfor them
The Fire department it is
understood will 'petition the
council for an electrio alarm
system and the mamtance , of a
cart and hosj in the old town
and across the track. As the
flarin system is estimated to cost
$2100 .Whether or not he city
can afford it is a. question for
the council to investigate, but
there is no question but , what
the citizens who reside in the
old town and across the track
are entitled to a cart aud hose

Don't be
Selfish
good opinion I the city. The
nresent condition of tue waias
in many places is such as to
make walking dangerous, ine
expense which would be incur-
ed to bring the walks inproper
condition would not be very
... a
great. Another fact to oe
taken into consideration is that
th government will insist be
fore free delivery if establis bed
that the walks be brought . to a
state of repair which will re
duce the danger of broken limbs
of the mail carriers to a reason
able risk. II we wish to make
a pleasing impression upon the
stranger, or if we wish to re
duce the risk of injury to our
selves, or if we desire free postal
delivery, we must reconstruct
the side walks .
