Three counties employ mere
common laborers than Union,
according to the report of Com

20,637 employed 819 common
laborers, being 3.5 per cent of
its population and Union county
with a population of 16,786
j people gave work in 1904 to 69a
J common laborers, being 4.14

i The whole state of Oregon, in
1904, gave work to 18,199 com

2.81 per eent Of the total popu

which are made up from the
date found in the official report
of the Commissioner of Labor
for Oregon, show that Union
county gives employment to a
per dent of common la

entire state.
Including the 698 common
laborers there were 3,661 per

given by the Commissioner of
Labor. Of this 698 were com

THE FIRST REPORT

days ago the First Biennial Re
port of the Bureau of Labor and
Inspector of Factories and work
shops of the state of Oregon from
June 3, 1903, to September 30,
1904.
This document d intended to
assist the Governor in executing
the present laws on labor and to
enable the members of the legis
lature to pass adequate laws on
that subject. It is a modest
pamphlet of 164 pages, but be
ing the first report from that,
Bureau, it is of especial interest
There arc 82 states that have
such bureaus. Pennsylvania
led off in 1872 and Oregon is
the last to fall in line, aud in
1903 it created the bureau that
has sent in its first report. This
report gives the total population
of Oregon for 1904 tt 469,458.
There were last year 86,115 per
sons in the state classed as farm
ers, 13,199 laborers. Union
oounty has 693 laborers credited
to it in the report, which num
ber is larger thin Wat employed
in eaoh of the other 38 counties
in the state hut Clackamas, with
818 and Multnomah with 2,673
laborers. '
There were SS4 bartendersre
ported, 1,019 blacksmiths and
3.591 carpenters in Oregon in
1904.
