The Baker City papers report
capitalists are making inquires
relative to starting a woolen
mill. The mills now in opera
tion at Pendleton and Union
are doing a splendid business
and the same would be true if
such an institution were in op
eration at Baker City and La
Qrande. It is only a question of
time when they will join the
push club, get in the band wa
gon. There is no reason why
1905 sHonld fade away with a
large woolen factory being op
erated in this city.

the matter up and that in a few
days the order would be issutd

senger trains. This will be
welcome news to the people of
North Powder as they have long
wished to be able to use either
or both trains passing.. .through
their town. The Commercial
Club is entitled to a vote of
thanks from the citizens of that
place for . its successful , efforts
along the line of obtaining this
much desired accomodation.

ployment to 150 men every
month in the year could be
successfully operated in this city
The way our streets and stor
es are crowded and have been
for several days. General pros
perity seems to have arrived as
usual at this time of the year.
INDEPENDENT HOUSEHOLD
Dr. TR Monk, of Summer
ville, is prehaps the only man in
the state of Oregon who has his
own water system and also his
own electric light plant. The
doctor has harnessed the little
stream which bubbles along
near bis home and has made it
pump water to his house in
quantities sufficient to furnish
water for the house, barn and
lawn. He has also forced the
same stream to furnish power
to drive a dynamo with which
he lights his home Ilia en
tire home is wired and the little
stream furnishes ample light for
all his needs. Trusts and com
bines have no terror for the
doctor.
The Evening Paper The Best
The San Francisco correspon
dent of the Stockton Mail writes
that paper as follows:
"I met the managing editor of
a big eastern morning paper the
ether day. He told me he had
200,000 circulation, and yet
there is nothing in it. The
great advertisers in the big
eastern cities no longer take
much stock iu the morning pa
pers. On the other hand the
evening papers are crowded to
death with advertising. The
morning papers subsist for ' the
most part on their Sunday edi
tions which are still regarded as
I good advertising mediums. But
the advertisers have discovered
that the advertisement! in the
week-day editions of the morn
ing papers are not read. A
man needs the morning paper
in his business. It contains a
complete account of the previous
day's markets. He puts it in
his pocket and reads it oh his
way down town, but his wife
rarely sees it. '
"I think it is true that men
are not great readers of adver
tisements. Certainly they have
not time to read hem in the
morning papers . On the other
hand, women study the adver
tisements carefully and the
evening paper gives them the
fullest opportunity to do so.
That is the explanation given
by a man who has been high in
the management of big daily
papers, morning and evening,
in three or four of the largest
cities of America."
