being founded on the assump

the territory in which it was
begun, and that t!ie neutrality
of China should be rigidly ob
served and respected, he saved
a constantly growing trade from
interruption, as well as securing
the confiuement of the horrors
of war to the smallest possible
extent of territory.
Two instances of the growing
importance of the Cnina trade
to the United States will, pract
ically, show all instances. The
exports of cotton cloth from the
United States to China iu Oct.
1904, were 43,343,533 yards, as
against only 9,070,600 yards in
October, 1903. But the increase
in exports, of miueral oils was
even greater. For the ten months
ending October 31, 1904, the
value of the mineral oil exports
was $6,478,788, as agaiust ouly
$1,834,958 for the corresponding
ten mouths of 1903.
The total exports to China
from the Unitad States footed

of the features,' and- its motto
will be "The Open Door." The
idea is that of Thomas B Clarke,
a well known New York art col

Fourth Asbistant Postmaster
General Briatow proposes to as
sist local retailers with a parcels
post Packages mailed from the
office at which a rural route
stattsmay be sent for three
cents a pound to anyone on that
route, the limit of weight being
five pounds. A special label
for local rural delivery must be
attached to such packages. It
is believed that this new service
will give countrv merchant on
advantage over the mail-order
There are several, places in
this city where checks' will te
given close attention: for ' the
itext few days There are also
several people who will be a
little slow in recommending
strangers who have brothers in
the east or checks drawn by
persons in foreign ports.
