TUESDAY EVENING.' DEC 13. 1904
PUBLISH THE GOOD
If a large number of ; the
a
Amrncan newspapers would e-
vince more energy in securing
news items wilh which to fill
their columns showing the good tb cater to depravity or expend
when the path of right aud vir
tue beginB to be slippery, often
finds excuse and defense for his
or her acts by saying "They all
do it." This is a most dauger
ous position and if not speedily
retreated , from will lead to
trcubla, if not to degredation
and mini -
The position that thero is
mo.e meaness than goodness a-
mong ine people is not only a
false, but a dangerous one. Take
the most pronounced "yellow
Journal" and if it 63 desired it
could fill its pages with honest
acts aud manly doings. Society
c( uld not hold together if the
people were aa bad as some as
sume them to be.
The history of yellow journal-1
ism in the United States dem
onstrates that the mass of the
people do not prefer newspapers
the interests of ' the publisher.
Properly conducted, there is no
doubt of the valne of such an or
ganization. " A love feast'of news
paper men at Baker, La Grande
or Pendleton might not be out
of the way after the holidays,
for the purpose cf discussing
things advantageous to the craft.
Union Republican. . ..
The above expresses our. sen
timents exactly. An Eastern
Oregon Press Association would
certainly be of advantage to , us
all. Think this over brothers
and let some one make a call for
the meeting. You can count on
us to be on hand. ,
acts done within the area - of
their news gathering :and , less
enterprise in hunting-1 up short
comings and mean doings.; the
world would be better therefor.
The reader of one of these scav
enger papers lays it down with
a low- estimate of the moral
status of the world and is apt to
conclude that vice predominates
and virtue is a fiction; that to be
with the majority he .or she
must follow the multitude, and
be wicked.
' As a rule, it is not long after
a person' begins to conclude that
mankind is a set' of scoundrels,
until he begins to doubt bis own
houestyi and to that extei.t loses
self respect, and only waits a fav-
their1 1 energies in chronicling J Xl&'
the wicked acts of the criminal ! 8teP
classes, Men and women are
doing noble acts every day and
in every neighborhood in ,the
United States and the people
are glad to read about the 1 hon
orable acts of their neighbors
because, such acts reflect credit
upon the community in which
they and their t families reside.
The local papers have much to
do in making the reputation of
the community in which it is
published, and if it is largely
filled with disreputable incidents
to the exclusion of noble ones,
the impression made on outside
readers is that it is published in
a law breaking from innnUv On
orable opportunity to do a mean lhe other haud ifu fi;ied wUh
thing. The columns filled with
thefts, robberies, murders, per
juries and other crimes, to the
exclusion of benevolent acts,
honest doings and honorable
conduct,5 present nefarious ob
ject lebons for the readers to
pattern after, and unfortunately
the models are too often followed
The young man or woman
notes of business' enterprises,
building of churches and school
houses and oUier honorable acts
the impression made is a - good
one.

The La Grande Electric Light

Thia is simply another
in the direction of La
Grande becoming a city. The
company has already received
many ordera for day power aud
it will be only a short time before
the entire output of the plant
