The work does not, as a role, take very muob ol tbeir time, and the pay la general considered more tban sufficient. EXPORT,OF LOCOMOTIVES Exports ol locomotives lor the nine months ending with September reoh ed 894 with a total valuation ol $3. 686,285. Tnis is an inoreseein num. bor 01193 and in value of $1,381,093 over tbe same period in 1903 and ot 118 and $917,261 respectively over .MM. ... For the period referred to Mexico imported from the United Btatts 134 locomotives, as compared with 62 in the same period for 1903 and 89 for 1902. British North America import ed 117 as eomparen with 87 iu 1903 and 76 in 1902. Locomotives exported from tbe United States to Japan in the nine months ending with September 19C4 were 68 in number against 28 in the corresponding period in 1903 and 12 in the oorreaponding period in 1902. Tbe value of these exports for the nine months in 1904 was $442,100, as oompared with $178,213 in tbe corres ponding months of 1903 and $111,162 in 1902. Steel rails exported Irom the Uuited States to Japan during the nine montns ending witb September 1904 amounted to $680,689 while the corresponding months ol 1903 show no exports of steel rails to Japan and for tbe oorreaponding months v,f 1902 a total of but $2195. It will be remembered that Malheur county voted "wet" by nearly 100 ma jority, but the vote b subdivisions made every preolnot in the county dry except Ontario and Jor Ian valley. Securing Good Plays Mr. D H Steward, the . manager of tbe Opera House at this plaoe, deserves rreat praise tor the attractions which he has caused to be produced here this season. . The productions at thla place have not only beau more numerous tban bits formerly been the case, but the quality ot tbe plays have been above the ordinary. The efforts of the man agement of the Opera House to secure good plays baa been crowned with suo cease is manifested and proven by the crowded bouses that have attended each and every production this eeason. The attendance has been greater tban ever before in the history of La Orande and she is becoming one of the best patronizers of good plays In the north west considering tbe Blsse of tbe place. Nothing but good talent has e'xibited here this season, and tbe people, ap preciating tbis fact, have turned out "en masse" to fee every attraction. Beside the numerous other companies which have played here this season for one night, there has been the Welder man Company and tbe Keith Stock Company which each played , weex en Lgagements, being attended each night with Immense audiences, sometimes so large that it was Impossible to seat all Indications all point to this season be log by far the best theatrical season that La Urande has ever experienced.
