In view of the laot that a prohibition election has been called for the entire county of Union, including the city of La Grande, we wish to place before the people the situation and financial oondition of oar oity and preface the game with a brief statement. -" ',r We believe that prohibition would have a disastrous effect on the finan ces of Iia Grande, of the oounty and of the state. We believe that it wonld have a depressing effeot on business of all kinds, and would . certainly in crease taxes. '..-','-' In order to meet the loss of revenue derived from licenses, communities adopting prohibition are forced to raise a portion of the lost revenue by increased taxes, and they meet the re niaiuing deficiency by reducing their expenses. In Union county, in La Grande and all other counties and cities 01 Oregon sut h a reduotioo In expenses would result In poorer streets fewer repair:), less buiMing Improve ments, and ' other undesirable econo mies, ' We do nut all of us, wish to be nn dertitood as being opposed to the gen eral pri. ciples of local option, but tLis principle is in no way Involve! in the coming prohibition election The protiibitio'iists hae taen advan tege of a new, stringenc and little un derstood law to call county eleotion, null that too against tbo wishes of many people who vuted for local op tion last June.
