DRUG HABITS GROW
AT ALARMING RATES
Aocording to a report jnst itsned by
the interdenominational committee
for the eappreB8lpn of drog addiotlon,
the spread of tbe drug habit is indreas
log at an alarming rite in this country,
says tbe Chicago Tribune.. It Is as
serted that there are more than 1,000,
000 morphine "flonds" in tbe Unl ed
States, and tbat one person in erery
hundred is addicted to drags.
The vice la moul prevalent among
the wealthy planes and among phy
sicians. . Many of the latter, who hare
become victims of drags, have become
on toasts. Numbers of them have been
reclaimed by the committee arid pat
on their feet again.
Doctors are blamed for the spread of
the drug habit (or, in prescribing
drugs to alleviate paiu, their jtien s
often become "fiends."
The offices of the committee are in
tbe trashy terian building, 156 Hlth
avenue, New fork. The Bar. B F
Sample, D 1)., L L D , former moder
ator of the general assembly, is preai
dent. ' "While the foreign Held needs
all. possible attention, unfortunately
the demands of oar country are little
short of startling," says the report.
A plea is made for a sanitarium for
vlotims of tae drag habit. There
are snelters for drunkards, furmer
oonviota, and fallen women, but none
for these victims of drugs. Publlo
spirited men and women seeking to
become public bjnefuotors could do
no better than endow a hospital . for
these unfortunates."
