JEFFERS0NIAN SIMPLICITY.
When Jefferson as a member
of tbe continental Congress wrote
the Declaration oi Independence
be was considered a rich man,
the owner 01 over 4U.U00 acres
of land witb improve! farms in
three counties in Virginia, with
a fine connty residence, 83 slaves,
fine houses, carriages and coches
and a household of 34 white
persons.
His county seat was famous
for tbe hospitality diepe
there. Quests from all parts of
America, and many from Europe
especialy from France spent
weeks at Monticello being enter
tained on the most liberal aad
best style known in America,
iraitaing tbe bouses of tbe
granders of France and titled
diguitares of Eogland in the
splendor of his furniture and
sumptnousness of bis dinners
His grounds about MoHecello,
little mouuntoin, were a park in
which he had, at great labor and
expenoes after many years
succeded in domesticating says

Cyclopedia, "he had almost
every tree and shrub, native and
foreign that could survive the
Virginia winter."

a nearly continuous public

retired to private life so seriously
impoverished that he was not

tobacco had reduced his private

During the 40 years of Mr.
Jefferson's publio life he drew
generous salaries ranging from
$3,600 a year to 125,000 a year
during the last eight years, of
his publio life be drew from the
publio treasury $200,000 and yet
such was his style of living that
this and his income from a large
landed estate cultivated by un
paid slaves be sems to not have
been able to come out even und
left publio life in debt.
To a person who has read and
informed himself as to the life
of Thomas Jeflerson and knows
that be was one of the most
liberal and expensive entertaiu-
ers in his private life in the
United States in his time, tbe
meauiug of the phrase in the
Democratic platform of 1004,
which reads thus. "To have
public officials, from the occup
ant of the White House down to
the lowest of them, return as
neatly as may be to Jeffersonian
simplicity of living" has no
definite meaning und savorB
strongly of a desire to decieve
and humbug.
There has been considerable
coiuent regarding the pteient
telephone sytem. Nearly
every member of the exchange
had reason to wish that tbe
present equipment was a little
more up-to-date and did not
bare evidence of having been
origuated at the beginning of
telephone industry. In other
