Stanley you some line M'Donald OKF.GON La tijande, Oregon HAVE OUTLIVED THEIR USEFULNESS The Five Bishops Whom The General Confer ference of the Methodist Church Re tired Had Been Faithful '.,:'' Workers. There is something pathetic in the action of the Methodist general conference in retiring five of its aged bishops, who had been renowned workers in- the ministry. They have outlivtd outlived to their usefulness, and ou of old age it was deemed able they should be placed on the 1 retired list. Duriue the lone ! years they bad occupied the posiiious they have labored j faithfully and" zealously for the j interests of the church; bat now they must step aside and consider! themselves of no more use in ! the active affairs of Methodism. ! This is the period of "the .ere,; the yellow leaf," and they mustl await with patience the time when their summons come to join the innumerable caravan. In this busy, bustling world there is little room for those who have grown old in the harness. They must give plaoo to youngi-ri and mure active men;, but, we are sorry to state, someti mes they are not treated with respect that is due to the services they bave rcudered. Old age is a condi tion,' not a crime, and those whos? hair is whitened with the snows of time should receive the consideration which their former usefulness merits It is only u question of years with the Commencement Program. To be slighted, and even scorned because the shadows of the eveu. ing of life have obscured the surrounding . landscape is a crime baser than ingratitude, and rarely exists among heathen nations. We do not believe the general conduct of the world regarding old men will . be Mlowed by the Metnodists toward their aged bishops, for they will retire from the ministry with the love and veneration of the membership of the great church. Their old age will be the delightful evening of life, when, as the earthly gleam glows denser, the rays of the heavenly stars can be' more readily discerned.
