Class 3 Wjth high school educa tion 657,432. , Class 4 With College Education 325,613. '', : With these figures before him the learned and ' painstaking writer selects 10,704 men who 1 1 . nave maae a marked suocess in life's battle with the following results, ' '' ''" ' . In the unedu ated class of 1,757,023 be was unable to nnd or hear a siugle person who h-tJ made such a success in life as 'o rai a. u BlDUDg me no'a 0 winners in lifes battle. From class 2 with its 12,054,335 ra it he found 1,368 notables or one I to every 8,812 in that, class. ' , From ' clues 3, those with a regular high school education he found 1,627 who had made an eminent success in life, or one for every 404 of tbat class. From class 4, with its total of 325,613 , who had a College education, he found 7,709 eminently successful men in lifes single or one for every 42 . The learned writer deducis from the following condition. 1st The man with no education baa nochanee in America to win a high prize in lifes battle. 2nd The, man with only a common school training has one chance in 9,000 to win a big prise in life. 3rd The high school train, ing increases his chances over the; one . that stopped- at the common school cours nearly 22 times. 4th A College education added to the foregoing ' gave a young man about ten times the cbanees of a . high school boy and 200 times toe chance of the boy who stepped with the common s. hool. La Grande Light & Power Co According to the statistical abstract of the United States, a work recently published by the Bureau of Statistics, U. S. De partment of Commerce and Labor, in the year 1902, there were 112, 047 c iklren in Ore gon from 5 to 18 years of age. O' these 100,659 were ' enrolled as pupils iu the common schools with an average daily attendance of 66,779 pupils. ' The average duration of in days waa.158, an increase.over 1901 of 30 days. To instruct this multitude of children . 4,510 teachers were employed in 1902' and -salaries paid to the amount . of $1,317, 750. Of these teachers "1,141 were males and . 3,869 females, The total cojt of the public schools in 1902 in Oregon, was 11,802,227, whioh does not in olude the cost of books and stationery. The question may be asked "What is the purpose of this huge expenditure of money?" Tbe answer is: Every parent should, and a very large pro portion of them do, desire to give their children a proper montal equipment for life's bat tle aud duties, so tbat they will have an equal chanoe to suc ceed with the children reared in other stales. A logical se quence to this answer is, does eduacation furnish this equip ment? Tbe Observor answers the last nueation bv extracts from the advance sheets, kindly sent it by the Hon. Win. W- Smith, chancellor of the Randolph Mason System, of an article he has prepared wilh great labor and research for the forth coming report of the U. ,S. Bureau of Education. ' . . Tue learned writer and dis tinguished educator saysr According to tbe lsst U. S Census there are 14,794,41'3 males in the Uuited Stales over 30 years old. The U S Bureau of Education estimates The Sucilists of this county expects to double their vote cati at the last election. As they based their vote iu this county on the vote oast two years ago ior secretary of state, whioh was 173, this means they ezpect to cast 356 votes at this electien.
