The war now going on in Asia between Japan and Rus sia may be the breaking up ol tbe old conditions that btive mado the United Slates but dis interested spectators of what was going on i here. The clash of arnin that we heur from there may be but tbo rasping of ropes and creaking of tackle blocks iucident to ibo ranine "f t ne curtains that Imvo concealed tbo duinfcs of ueHrly a billion of people. When the curtains that bave bid two thirds of tbe inhabitants of tbe earth from tbe observation of the other third for thousands of years bave been rolled up or down, the Uuited States may behold things clearly of which it has heretofore had but slight glimpses. We know too little of what will actually be revealed, to nt this time form but imper fect ideas of the extent ti which our interests may be affected by tbe great change that now seems about to take place iu tbe veri table cradle of tbe human race. There is uo doubt but tbe United States will be most em phatically affected by tbe change but whether for good or evil no man can now fortee. Neither ean we form an intellectual idea as to how we will be affected should victory perch upon either one nf tbe hostile banners. Should Russia win, Japan and China, commercially at least, will be dominated by Rustia, and (bo trade of the other peoples that compose the western world will have to pay tribute in a greater or less de gree foi any privilege the ciar may acceed them, to do busi ness in that extensive propor tions and wealthy portion of eurth. Should Japan win and biw come tbe land dominant in the Orient, 'thru what? Events, as we get glimpses ol them, plain ly indicate that China and Japan have an understanding that puts their hopes on com mon ground We aie in total ignorance of what that common 3ruund is, but from what we do know of the apparently . fixed seutiment of the 400,(100,000 Chinese and 'he traditional feeling of all Asiatics in regard to foreigners, there is a strong probability thai the common ground upon which China and Japan are si tiding is the one lately exprei-suii ly a high olfi ci nl at th in ki i'o's court: ' ''All Asia tor tbe Asiatics," whh'b is but a polite furnjula for ex pressing the Boxers' battle cry, "Out with the foreign devils." Should Jupan win, and she can win only by China's aid, either actively exerted or quies cently employed, intelligent and ambitious Japan will quickly see, if she does not now, that to be the laud of the Orient she has only to declare a Monroe Ooctrino, "Asia for the Abiatics" which she will ba able to en foice and thus compel all west eiu people to submit t) such terms as she may impose or not trade with China or Japan. In such a case who can tell how the Uuited States would fare? The demand for ministers in this state is greater than tbe supply. There are two vacan cies in this city at the present time and we note from our many exchanges that there are vacant pulpits in not a few cities in the state. The republican county cen tral committee meets in this city Friday to arrange for the campaign. There has been no date set as yet for a meetiue of the democratic central commit tee. All indications point to an immense wheat crop this sea- sou. The full grain ig growing hue. This is ideal beet weathe and an increased tonnage so far seems ussured.
