J. H. Peare, the Jeweler
the sholesale market, tbe retail
price is an exorbitant one. The
result of this mod of doing
butiuess is tbat tbe growing of
Italian prunes in Oregon is not
only on the decline, but fast
passing oat of existence, and
the whole prune business threat
ens to collapse, in ' which esse
neither wholesalers nor trans
portation men will have any
business in or . profits from
prunes. . . - -'
; This is an easy year for Re
publican platform wi iters. All
they have to do is to endorse
President Roosevelt's patriotic
administration. That tells the
whole story for tbe great mass
of tbe piople all know that bis
heartbeats in unison with the
common people and they are the
supporters of this great country.
A few years a,;o the orchard
ists in Oregon banked largely
on profits to be derived from
growing prunes for market.
This wa especially tbe case with
regard to tbe larger or Italian
varieties. Our fruit men read
up on the cultar; and prepara
tion of tbe prune for market
and went into the business with
such vim tbat thousands of
acres were set out in , prunes;
this was especially tbe case in
Southern Oregon where large
fields were set out is Italian
prunes. Tbe trees grew wiih
thrift and vigor and bore good
crops, but after one or two crops
had been d if posed of at renum
eralive prices, for some cause
or other the price to the giowers
slumped to a mark that left no
margin of profit to the orcbard
ists and now the press from
Southern Oregon reports that
the growers are grubbing up
their prune trees, as "unprofit
able cumbers of tbe ground."
To tbe consumers of Italian
dried prunes, tbe price thereof
has not fallen in th same pro
portion that it has to tbe pro
ducers. While the orchardists
were only paid 3 cents per
pound as the highest rates, tbe
Rome prunes could not be pur
chased cf tbe wholesale dealers
in Portland by country mer
chants at figures that would en
able them to dispense them to
their consumers ut less than 8
cents, or three pounds for twen
ty five ceuls, the additional five
cents per pound, less the ordin
ary profit on such goods, being
consumed iu wholesaler's profits
and freight rates. .
This seems to be a case where
the wholesale dealers and trans
portation men have co-operated
in reducing tbe price of a com
modity to the producer without
reduciug it to the consumer,
with tbe effect that orchardists
are ceasing to grow prunes, be
cause of thu low prices paid them
therefor, and the consumers The couuty ticket is looking
