In 1898 the vote in Union county for the three candidates for supreme judges aggregated 2,898. Six years later, in 1902 there were again three candi dates for office of supreme judge and the aggregate vote cast for all three in Union county was 3,007. showing a gain in six years of but 111 vctes. This is an annual gain of 18 votes. It is a well recognised fact known to all residents of Union county that the population in creased during the six years from 1890 to 1902 was much more rappidly than is indicated by the recorded increase 'of tbe vote. The gain in population in Union county from 1890 to 1900 was 4,028 being 402.6 per year this rate of increase would give an annual increase to our popu lation of 2415.6 for the 6 years from 1896 to 1902 and an in crease of the voters by at least Island City Snowflake One day in early spring time, Island City donned her best, A ad prepared to give the dancing class One grand final bequest; And who say a that Island City, In originality Of entertaining dancers, Behind the timea can be Is very much mistaken, For It a more novel way Has been shown in modern circles, The record met delay. We surely claim the precedence, Hut, why they chose that time To grace a grand occasion, We leave you to divine. 1 am sure our La Grande neighbors, Must, highly honored feel, l''or the warmth ot their reception, Was astonishingly real We invited them to join us In our enowflake promenade And we hupe, our hospitality Has, some impression made. O! gentle Hiawatha Did vonr love for mankind cease, Or, w hy did you consign ub To the mercy of the bees? We know, the light fantastic Of your tytlimic melodies, lias not reached our distant city, But, remember, if yuu please, When the bund struck up tho measure, Wo did our best to plcnre, And, because we knew no other way. We two stepped it with ease. But tho bees, they proved good "Hun ters," And held us all nt "Hay," And into Carrie's symphony, lixtra grace notes found their way. And then, one straggling tryant, Spied Caroline's bouquet. And our kind instructors saw with grief, Tho others go that way. Floyd's masterly oration, Was punctuated with a sting, But be, undaunted, did not di Ign To notice such a thing. They did even take the bin', When Nell, in accents strong. Referred them to some rulings, Which to etiquette bclo: g, Tho lillle snontlnken played their part, Hut still, the bo?a held sway, Till a tropical dolusron, served An eBcnpe to portray. Nuw, all you lads and lasses Who were present at the hall, Let's go and get the houev Up in the Lindsay hall. lt,B ours. But with a male population ' in Oregon in 1900 o: 144,446, the vote cast that year for president of the U. S. was but 80,096. This shows that there 60,350 men 21 year-i old and over in Oregon in 1900 who did not vote, of these 3,758 were aliens and not entitled to voto, deduct ing these and there seems there were 56,692 legal voters in Ore gon who did not go to the polls in 1900. There doubtless is soma dis coverable cause that keeps near ly one-third of the legal voters in the State away from the polls. The query now is, should this large number of non voters conclude to vote next June, what havoc will be wrought on calculations based on past elec tion returns?
