A most interesting chapter might.be compiled from the un written history ol the Old Blue Mountain University at La Grande, The material for such a chapter will have to be sought in the memories of those, who lived here some thirty years ago, wi'lely scattered records and private letters and old newsps peis that have escaped the mil dew of time, the hazzard of re movals and a third of a century of house cleaning and rubbish burning. Tbe chapter is worthy of the most gifted pen, guided by a hand familiar with the grasp of of the pioneer, inspired by a heart in full sympathy with the task of laying the foundation of civilization in a new country , and a keen knowledge of the impedi ments to be overcome and cour age required to meet and overcome tbem. To attempt to found an' in stitution of learning in asparcely settled community, one hun dred miles from steamboat nav igation surrour-ded by moun tain ranges that appalled rail road engineers and detered cup itulists from even considering the proposition to send the steam cars across the deserts slreches, and over mountain ranges w:.9 a bold undertaking, one that none but pioneers; who were desire ous to build lioino8 and rear fbtnilies, civilized cultured fnmi- LaGrande in 1S72 illustrates the high purposees of the early pio neer, and . the success attained in a region wherein tlia first cabin built by white men was but 13 years old, demonstrates that the piouner is not the rude "half-civilized" being, he is al most universally represented to be in the literature of America. The OnsKRVKK is under great obligation to Mrs. Anna Stevens for a copy of the Mountain Sen tinel, published in La Grande June 5, 1875, in which appeuis the first advertisement of the Blue Mountain Uuiveriity, stal ing that "it will open Dec,, i5th 1874 with J. L. Carter . acting president and professor of nat ural science, Mrs. E. J. Hines, preceptress and teacher in ac ademical department aud Annu M. Stevens, teacher in the pri mary department and teacher of music. The faculty was com lies, would even have dared to undertake. The attempt to found the Blue Mountuin University at posed of home cnleut, pioneers. The building owned by the insti tution was a two story brick, errected at a cost of $18,000, which was the free gift of the pioneers that class that has becu discribed by such writors as Cooper, Irving and others as "half-civilized" beings who to escape from civilization, shoul dered their rifles, trundled their rugged wives and "tow headed., children into an ox wagon fled into the wilderness.
