hundred and eight years, and
yet how few, how very few, com
prehend the great truths about
the innate dignity and rights of
man that ho proclaimed in the
sweetest songs that havo ever
charmed the ears or inspired
the souls of a long oppressed and
degraded race.
When a retrospect is taken of
the age in which Burns lived,
and of all the ages that preceed
ed his, aud then read the groat
tiuths about human rights that
he gave utterance to, the wonder
intensifies and he becomes the
enigma of all the ages past and
the evangel of hope to all tho
ages yet to "come. When Burns
wrote
"The rank is but a guinea stomp
The man's the gold for all that"
the accepted dogma iu all
nations and people was that the
king was the fountain of all
honors, the sole and undisputed
monopolist of ran k and" power,
Which he held by Divine right,

The feudal system had left
the people, for centuries, divid
ed into cans, the land owned by
great lords and court favorites,
the word farmer meant a router

fixed their wages, and then' in
