After adjusting to remote learning, hybrid learning and masking during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Class of 2022 settled back
into a more typical routine of classes and activities for its final year of high school. And with challenges overcome, the students
are now graduates. To recognize their accomplishments, the Silverton Appeal-Tribune is publishing the lists of Silveton-area

Credit recovery is helping Oregon students

While we celebrate the Class of 2022
this month, many students didn’t re-
ceive their high school diplomas because
they’re missing high school credits.
Numerous freshmen, sophomores
and juniors have also fallen behind and
need to get back on track to graduate on
time.
Credit recovery gives students a sec-
ond chance.
High school can be overwhelming for
teens, but the pandemic added an un-
precedented level of challenges for stu-
dents. Oregon’s graduation rate and the
number of freshmen on track to gradu-
ate dropped.
The state no longer requires students
to demonstrate certain essential skills
to graduate, but they’re still required to
earn 24 credits in subjects like math,
language arts and science.
When a student doesn’t comprehend
a concept the first time, often the rest of
the class moves on, and that student
falls even more behind. Thankfully
nearly ninety percent of school districts
offer credit recovery programs.
What is credit recovery?
Credit recovery is a term for a variety
of educational strategies allowing stu-
dents to “recover” credits in a particular
course where they need additional help.
Using credit recovery, students can
redo coursework earning credit based
on competency of the content stan-
dards for that particular class.
What kinds of students take
credit recovery classes?
There are many reasons students
seek a makeup class, from those who
struggle academically to ones very active
in sports. Recently, physical and mental
health issues have made school harder
for some children, making credit recov-
ery programs a good option for them.

school students seeking extra support as
they transition to high school. Children
