2A | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2021 Small Business Adviser | APPEAL TRIBUNE Football Jennifer Morrow Chemeketa Small Business Continued from Page 1A Development Center Marketing choices: what’s essential? How do you choose between social media or email marketing? Or print ads or direct mail or billboards? Or … ? I’ve worked with many business owners through the Chemeketa Small Business Development Center. They often ask, “What marketing will work best?” They start with a website, (yes, it’s essential). But what’s next? Marketing is about people, not you or what you offer. Marketing is not about what you’re selling, or how long you’ve been in business or how you make what you sell. All those things might matter … and can be important to how you ex- press value and promote … but ONLY if they reflect what your audiences want and care about. Before you choose what to say and where to say it … KNOW YOUR AUDI- ENCES. When you know and understand the people you must reach to be suc- cessful, what their concerns and prob- lems are, their reasons to search out what you offer, you’ll market effective- ly. It’s that simple. But it’s still not easy. That’s why WHAT you’re market- ing is less important. Answer “What’s in it for me?” specifically, for the right audiences, and you’re nearly there. Your message is critical Your message isn’t “We do xyz.” It’s the answer to “What’s in it for me?” and “Why should I care?” from your target audiences’ viewpoint. That critical message must be in your ta- gline and on your website’s home page. Support it with detailed proof points. Avoid generic language such as “great quality” or “outstanding ser- vice.” Instead, be specific about how you fulfill that. Think WIIFM when you write content for your website or a so- cial media post, an email or ad. Target where people can take action Knowing your audiences will guide where you place your marketing mes- sage. Your website is the foundation. Your marketing goal is to generate in- terest and send people to your website (or retail store). A few guidelines: h If you’re a local business with trucks or vans, vehicle graphics (with the right message) are huge. Think free billboards. h If you sell to other businesses, build a professional LinkedIn pres- ence, and ensure your website pro- vides valuable information to down- load so you can capture warm leads. h If your audience is younger and your products/services are visual, look at Instagram to grab attention. Finding your audiences No business appeals to everyone. You want to market to your people — your best customers, those who love what you do and recommend you. Focus on those people … who they are, how they find you, how they choose, what they expect, what they know or don’t know about what you do, what experience they’ve had with your competitors. Using their words (testimonials and reviews!) will add power to your marketing — on your website, in social media or ads. No matter who you’re marketing to, how you sell or what you sell, the first principle of marketing is to reach the right audiences with the right message in the right place. Jennifer Morrow is a Business Ad- viser at the Chemeketa Small Business Development Center. The Small Busi- ness Adviser column is produced by the Center and appears each third Sunday of the month. Questions can be submit- ted to SBDC@chemeketa.edu or call (503) 399-5088. Marketing is not about what you’re selling, or how long you’ve been in business or how you make what you sell. All those things might matter … and can be important to how you express value and promote … but ONLY if they reflect what your audiences want and care about.
