Eighty-two players were selected to fill
out four teams in the inaugural draft

The inaugural Mavericks Indepen-
dent Baseball League season opens in
less than a month at Volcanoes Stadi-
um, and rosters for the four teams are
taking shape.
Eighty-two players were selected in
the inaugural draft April 9, including
several players with local connections.
Alexander Wemple, the 40-year-old
prospect who drove from Kentucky for
the one-day tryout and was featured by
the Statesman Journal, was not draft-
ed.
Two of the first four draft picks didn’t
attend the April 3 tryout in Keizer — out-
fielder Jamal Howard, No. 1 overall by
the Salem Senators, and Wladimir Ga-
lindo, fourth overall by the Portland
Mavericks. Some players sent resumes
and videos to the managers instead of
making the trip to Oregon.
The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes used
their first draft pick and second overall
to select utility player Julian Hunt.
Catcher Sergio Rey was the first player
drafted by the Campesinos de Salem-
Keizer, going third overall. Left-hander
Luke Kelley, chosen fifth overall by the
Mavericks, was the first pitcher drafted.
The first prospect on the draft board
recognizable by Mid-Valley baseball
fans was shortstop Trever Morrison, a
former Oregon State University stand-
out who was selected by the Campesi-
nos sixth overall. Morrison, like many of
the players drafted, has minor league
experience.
The 20th overall pick was South Sa-
lem High School standout Danny Alva-
rado, a catcher-third baseman chosen
by the Mavericks, managed by Alan
Embree. Because players in the inde-
pendent league don’t get paid, they
retain their amateur status. Alvara-
do, who helped the Saxons reach the
OSAA Class 6A state semifinals in
2018 and 2019, is a senior at South.
The Campesinos, managed by Daniel
Robertson, are looking like a farm team
for Western Oregon University, drafting
five players who played for the Wolves.
Left-handed pitcher Austin Crowson
was drafted 22nd overall, infielder Col-
lin Runge 30th, right-handed pitcher AJ
Burke 32nd, infielder Patrick Chung
38th, and right-handed pitcher Cam
Walker 46th.
Another Western Oregon product
went to the Senators, right-handed
pitcher Matt Dunaway, with the 40th
overall selection.
The Senators, managed by Dave
Wong, also drafted right-handed pitch-
er Mickey Walker, who is listed as the
league’s CEO, with the 57th pick overall.
Walker played at McNary High
School and Saint Martin’s University in
Lacey, Washington, before returning to
Keizer to help operate the Salem-Keizer
Volcanoes. His parents, Jerry and Lisa
Walker, brought minor league baseball
back to Salem-Keizer in 1997, and their
club was affiliated with the San Francis-
co Giants until being left out of the mix
during Major League Baseball’s recent
restructuring of its farm system.
The Senators also drafted JaVon Lo-
gan with their 19th round selection. Lo-
gan is a 2017 graduate of Regis High
School in Stayton where he was a first-
team Class 2A/1A all-state selection af-
ter batting .516 with a 1.000 slugging
percentage. He is currently playing for
Chemeketa Community College.
The Mavericks league has no ties to
the majors.
The team selected former McKay,
Chemeketa and Western Oregon out-
fielder Alex Emerson with the 44th pick
and Riley Newman, who pitched at West
Salem and Linfield, with the 76th pick.
A pair of former Giants prospects
perhaps familiar to Salem-Keizer fans
also were drafted — right-handed
pitcher Israel Cruz eighth overall to the
Senators, and catcher Keyberth Mejias
31st overall by the Volcanoes, managed
by Tony Torcato.
Each team is allowed 22 players on its
roster, and league rules allow only so
many transactions during the season.
All four teams left at least one roster
spot open — the Volcanoes and Campe-
sinos two — giving them flexibility en-
tering the season.
The season runs from May 13 through
Aug. 29, and all games will be played at
Volcanoes Stadium. Game times are
6:35 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and 1
p.m. and 6:35 p.m. Saturdays and Sun-
days.
Season tickets and ticket packages
are available by emailing maverick-
sleague2021@gmail.com or calling 503-
390-2225.
The league continues to recruit host
families to provide housing, meals and
transportation for a player or players.
One of the perks of being a host family
includes free season tickets. For more
