2B | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 2021 Training Continued from Page 1B drops, set up my skies on the perfect line and then dropped down, through a rush of cold air and flying snow. It was exactly the type of speed and cerebral challenge that had been lacking on snowshoes. Eventually, I connect- ed to the North Loop, which has a reputation of the fastest route at Ray | APPEAL TRIBUNE Benson, and indeed, the final few miles offered some nice rolling hills to end the journey. I still enjoy snowshoe- ing, especially for more technical, off-trail or sketchy snow adven- tures. But for this winter, it’s all about gliding along with a little more speed and challenge in Oregon’s snowy backcountry. Notes -If you’re interested in getting into cross country skiing, I’d highly recom- mend joining and getting tips from the Oregon Nor- dic Club’s Willamette Val- ley chapter. - I typically wake up before dark and try to reach Ray Benson at sun- rise so I am on the trail early. Not only do you en- counter fewer crowds but also enjoy cooler snow that doesn't stick to your skis as much. -Make sure to thank, contribute to or volunteer with the Cascade Volunteers, who do lots of work clearing logs off the trails so we can enjoy it, along with the Mount Jef- ferson Snowmobile Club. -Remember to pack the 12 winter essentials before heading out. Those include: 1 Winter First Aid kit 2 Matches and fires- tarter 3 Extra food and wa- ter 4 A rain, snow and windshell and extra clothing and gloves or mittens 5 Plastic whistle 6 Camp, compass and handheld GPS / smart phone 7 Flashlight with ex- tra batteries and 8 Emergency reflec- tive rescue blanket 9 Pocket knife 10 Avalanche cord or transceiver and snow shovel when in ava- lanche country 11 Sunglasses or gog- gles 12 Ski repair kit Zach Urness has been an outdoors reporter, photographer and Athletes videographer in Oregon for 12 years.
