2A ❚ WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 2020 ❚ APPEAL TRIBUNE BRIEFS Silver Falls hires new superintendent After conducting a seven-month search and considering 28 candi- dates, Silver Falls School District’s board has cho- sen a new superinten- dent. Scott Drue is leav- ing the Beaverton School District to take Silver Falls’ top administrative job on July 1. He’ll replace interim Supt. Paul Peter- son, who was hired in Au- gust after longtime su- perintendent Andy Bel- lando resigned. The search for a per- manent hire began with a survey of school commu- nities last fall and ended with Drue’s hiring on May 11. Drue brings 22 years of experience in a variety of educational roles. Since 2007, he has been the principal of Alo- ha-Huber Park K-8 School in the Beaverton School District, a job he took after serving as the school’s assistant princi- pal. Before that, he was the categorical programs advisor and an elemen- tary teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. “From the minute I started learning about the Silver Falls School District, the more enam- ored I have become,” Drue said. “The suppor- Fireworks Continued from Page 1A Once the garden can re-open, organizers plan to host some free days for Silverton residents, po- tentially with a limited number of timed tickets to ensure proper social distancing. “We are trying to be creative and look at ways to invite the community into the garden for free, to get a breath of fresh air after this is all over,” said Kitchen. “We know this has been hard on every- tive community; a focus on building strong, trust- ing relationships with students and staff; a fo- cused strategic plan; and a unique organizational model are just a few of the many reasons why I leaped at this opportuni- ty.” Drue has a Master of Arts degree in education- al administration from California State Univer- sity Dominguez-Hills. He completed his adminis- trative licensure program at Lewis and Clark Col- lege. In 2015, he was Ore- gon Principal of the Year and the National Distin- guished Principal. “We are extremely ex- cited to have Mr. Drue joining the district,” said Board Chair Jonathan Edmonds. “His ideals, ex- perience, and back- ground make him an ex- cellent fit. He has a pas- sion for K-8 schools and his remarkable track rec- ord speaks for itself.” Relief grants going out, more donors sought On the first day Silver- ton’s Small Business Re- lief Fund began accepting applications, 20 local businesses asked for aid totaling $36,000, orga- nizers said. The fund is pushing $50,000 after being seeded last month with $10,000 from the one, and we want to pro- vide a beautiful place to escape to, as soon as we can.” Overall, the garden has been hit hard by the pandemic, like so many other businesses, leaders said. The organization laid off or furloughed 80 percent of staff and has been without volunteers since officially closing in March. Between missing staff and volunteers, the property has lost 500 hours of labor each week since closing and has lost about $1,100 of revenue daily. “Gardens need to be Rotary Club of Silverton and bolstered by Silver- ton City Council’s dona- tion of a $15,000 county grant. Organizers hope to grow the fund from $50,000 to $75,000. De- signed to help local busi- nesses stay afloat as they experience financial loss from enforced closures related to COVID-19, the relief fund is meant to supplement governmen- tal aid. Starting next week, the fund’s committee is expected to give away a number of $1,000- $3,000 grants. The first wave of business appli- cants had until May 15 to file requests for aid. A second wave of applica- tions can be turned from now until May 29. We know our volunteers are eager to get back to work, and we’re eager to have them back, as soon as it’s safe. We’re also really looking forward to having visi- tors in the garden again, and want it to look great for them.” For more infor- mation, log on to https:// www.oregongarden.org/ membership/.
