Detroit Lake Continued from Page 1A The low-water Mongold boat ramp at Detroit Lake is now closed due to water levels dropping way below normal for dam repairs, making access to the lake difficult to impossible for anglers through mid-January. PHOTO COURTESY OF THE OREGON PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT woman Lauren Bennett said. "We are taking three spillway gates out and con- ducting rehab work on two of them. This means the gates wouldn't be able to hold back any water. Since we have fewer gates operational from now until mid- January, we decided it would be best to act conservatively and draw down the reservoir low enough that we could cap- ture any potential storm event from now until mid-January.” The primary purpose of Detroit Lake is flood control, and by making the res- ervoir that low, officials say they can still limit a potential flood from hitting the North Santiam River and Willamette Valley. Even so, the news was disappointing to local anglers who often get their limit at Detroit in winter. “It’s disappointing,” said Henry Hughes, who frequently fishes Detroit in the winter. “My wife and I were plan- ning to fish on Thursday and there wasn’t any warning this would happen.” Hughes said that after he and his wife came across the closed boat ramp, they took out spinning rods and hiked a half- mile to a good place to fish from the shoreline. “The fishing is still incredible — we caught seven nice trout in about two hours,” said Hughes, a professor at Western Oregon University. “If they have to repair the gates to safely operate the dam, it’s hard to argue with that. And, there are still ways to make the best of it” Zach Urness has been an outdoors re- porter, photographer and videographer in Oregon for 11 years.
