final hotel isn’t arrogance

LYON,  France  –  Preparing  for  the
Women’s  World  Cup  semifinal  against
the  United  States,  coach  Phil  Neville
was irritated to discover the Americans
scoping out England’s hotel.
The  Americans  could  move  into  the
hotel if they win the next game.
U.S. coach Jill Ellis insisted it was a
sign of good preparation rather than ar­
rogance, but Neville suggested it could
be a disciplinary matter for the staff dis­
patched to the hotel and bad etiquette
As  the  designated  home  team,  Eng­
land had first choice of hotels and so will
the  winner  of  Tuesday’s  semifinal  as
they prepare for the final, which is also
being played in Lyon.
A  pair  of  U.S.  staffers  visited  the
Fourvière Hotel, which is close to the old
town, while England was out at a prac­
tice session Sunday.
“I  think  that’s  important  to  do  your
job,” Ellis said. “So in terms of arrogance
I think that’s got nothing to do with us.
That’s planning and preparation for our
staff. So I think that’s pretty normal.”
Not  so,  according  to  Neville.  He
thinks Ellis should have been far tough­
er.
“We  were  training,  I  hope  they  en­
joyed the hotel but it’s not something we
would  do  –  sending  someone  round  to
another team’s hotel,” Neville said. “But
it’s  their  problem.  I  am  sure  that  Jill
probably  wouldn’t  have  been  happy
with that arrangement. I wouldn’t have
been if that was my team ops person go­
ing round.
“I  am  sure  they  will  be  dealing  with
their  own  infrastructure  within  their
own discipline problem.”
SPIELBERG,  Austria  –  The  car  Mi­
chael Schumacher drove to win his rec­
ord seventh Formula One championship
in 2004 will make a return to the Hock­
enheim Ring next month ­ and his son
will be driving it.
F1 organizers said Sunday that Mick
Schumacher will use his father’s Ferrari
F2004  for  demonstration  runs  during
the German Grand Prix weekend on July
27­28.
Mick Schumacher, who is competing
in  Formula  2  for  Prema  Racing  and  is
part  of  Ferrari’s  driver  academy,  will
drive the car prior to Saturday’s qualify­
ing and again before the drivers’ parade
ahead of Sunday’s race.
“I think it is mega driving this car in
Hockenheim,” Mick Schumacher said. “I
will be able to drive one of the strongest
cars in Formula 1 history there. A big grin
creeps into my face.”
Four  of  Michael  Schumacher’s  91  F1
race  wins  came  at  Hockenheim,  while
his son won the FIA Formula 3 European
Championship on the track in the Rhine
valley last year.
“It will be an emotional moment see­
ing Mick at the wheel of a car linked to
so  many  great  memories,”  F1’s  manag­
ing director for motorsport Ross Brawn
said.  “The  F2004  was  a  fantastic  car,
which took 15 wins and both champion­
ship titles in a season that can be seen
as the culmination of a golden period.”
Hurricanes acquire Reimer in swap
of goalies with Panthers
The  Carolina  Hurricanes  have
swapped  goalies  by  acquiring  James
Reimer in a trade with the Florida Pan­
thers.
Florida acquired goalie Scott Darling
and immediately placed him on waivers
with  the  intention  to  buy  out  the  re­
maining two years of his contract. The
Panthers  also  acquired  a  sixth­round
pick in the 2020 draft in the trade made
Sunday,  a  day  before  the  start  of  the
NHL’s free­agent signing period.
Reimer helps address the Hurricanes’
immediate need at goalie with co­start­
ers Petr Mrzaek and Curtis McElhinney
eligible  to  become  unrestricted  free
agents.
The 31­year­old Reimer had a 13­12­5
record and a .900 save percentage in 36
games  with  the  Panthers  last  season.
Overall, Reimer has a 144­120­19 record
in 338 games, including stops in Toronto
and San Jose.
For  Florida,  the  trade  amounted  to
the team freeing up space under the sal­
ary  cap  in  dealing  Reimer  and  buying
out Darling’s contract.
University of New Mexico says
goodbye to 4 sports programs
ALBUQUERQUE,  N.M.  –  An  era  is
ending at the University of New Mexico
as the school officially stops four sports
programs, including men’s soccer.
Head  soccer  coach  Jeremy  Fishbein
says unsuccessful efforts over the past
year to save the program have left those
associated with it physically and men­
tally exhausted.
Men’s soccer has been one of the uni­
versity’s  most  successful  teams,  win­
ning  its  share  of  conference  titles  and
making regular appearances in the na­
tional collegiate tournament.
All four programs are set to end Mon­
day after the UNM Board of Regents vot­
ed  last  year  to  cut  soccer  along  with
beach  volleyball  and  the  men’s  and
women’s ski teams to shore up a budget
deficit within the athletic department.
Officials also said they needed to ad­
dress  compliance  issues  with  federal
mandates  regarding  equal  opportunity
for female athletes.
Fishbein said it has been an honor to
coach at the university over the past 18
years.
In a parting statement, he described
soccer  as  a  progressive  and  diverse
sport that will be part of the state’s fu­
ture.
“The game we all love is too powerful
and too important to the youth of New
Mexico and the youth of our country,” he
said. “It will be up to all of you to con­
tinue the fight to re­instate Lobo men’s
soccer.”

SPIELBERG, Austria – Max Verstap­
pen  won  the  Austrian  Grand  Prix  for  a
second straight year on Sunday as Red
Bull  ended  Mercedes’  unbeaten  streak
this season.
The Dutchman recovered from a poor
start to work his way up to the front of
the  pack  from  eighth  place,  and  over­
took leader Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari
with just two laps to go.
However,  stewards  were  investigat­
ing  Verstappen’s  move  to  pass  Leclerc
as both cars touched.
Starting  from  pole  position  for  the
second time in his career, Leclerc led the
race almost throughout but just missed
his first career win.
Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas com­
pleted  the  podium,  ahead  of  Ferrari’s
Sebastian  Vettel  and  championship
leader  Lewis  Hamilton,  who  started
fourth after a grid penalty and lost time
to  replace  the  front  wing  of  his  Mer­
cedes after 33 laps and finished fifth.
Illinois city seeks to help finance
women’s baseball museum
ROCKFORD, Ill. – Officials in the Illi­
nois city home to the women’s baseball
team  that  inspired  the  1992  film  “A
League of Their Own” want to help fund
a $7 million museum honoring the role
of women in the sport’s history.
The city of Rockford’s planning com­
mittee  agreed  this  week  to  provide
$20,000 to help kick off construction of
the  International  Women’s  Baseball
Center. The City Council will likely vote
on  the  plan  next  week,  the  Rockford
Register Star reported.
The museum, hall of fame and train­
ing facility will be located near the stadi­
um where the Rockford Peaches played
in the 1940s and 1950s as part of the All­
American  Girls  Professional  Baseball
League.  The  first  phase  of  the  project
will build an outdoor pavilion with mon­
uments  that  resemble  baseball  cards
and honor women involved in the sport.
The first exhibit will be dedicated to
Penny  Marshall,  who  directed  the  film
starring  Tom  Hanks  and  Geena  Davis.
It’s expected to be unveiled in Septem­
ber.
The center will announce and unveil
eight more exhibits.
“Here in Rockford, women who par­
ticipated in all aspects of the sport will
be  honored,  but  perhaps  more  impor­
tantly  their  stories  will  be  used  to  in­
spire current and future generations of
girls,”  said  Kat  Williams,  the  center’s
president.
Williams said women should be rec­
ognized  “as  players,  coaches,  umpires,
owners and groundskeepers.”
Alderman  Tim  Durkee  spoke  of  the
city’s contribution as the type of project
that  local  government  should  get  in­
volved in. Durkee said the museum will
promote  women’s  participation  in
sports  and  preserve  part  of  Rockford’s
history.
Switzerland forward Ismaili
missing after swimming accident
GENEVA – Switzerland forward Flor­
ijana Ismaili is missing after getting into
difficulties while swimming in Italy.
Swiss  side  Young  Boys  Bern  says  it
has  been  informed  that  Ismaili,  who
plays  for  its  women’s  team,  has  been
missing since she had a swimming acci­
dent at Lake Como in Lombardy on Sat­
urday afternoon.
The  club  says:  “The  police  searches
are  still  underway.  We  are  very  upset
and have not given up hope that all will
end well.”
The club adds, “We are in close con­
tact  with  family  members  and  ask  for
understanding  that  we  cannot  make
any  further  comment  at  this  time.  We
will  inform  again  as  soon  as  we  know
more.”
Italian  news  agency  Ansa  reported
that Ismaili rented a boat with a friend.
She apparently dived into the lake from
the boat but did not resurface.
The  24­year­old  Ismaili  has  been
playing for Bern since 2011.
