SILVERTONAPPEAL.COM ܂ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2018 ܂ 3B Dry spring brings banner year for acorns Gardening U.S. POSTAL SERVICE Statement of Ownership, Management, and Circulation. (All Periodicals Publications Except Requester Publications) Carol Savonen Guest columnist 1. Publication Title: Silverton Appeal 2. Publication Number: 496-860 Question: I have a large Oregon white oak in the courtyard in front of my house. This year it is produc- ing so many big acorns; it is unreal. Can you explain what is going on? Answer: This year seems to be a banner year for acorns on Oregon white oak, Quercus garryana, at least from what I’ve seen near my home here west of Corvallis. I have several Oregon white oaks on my property and a huge one near my house. The larger than usual sized acorns have been hitting my roof now for a few weeks. In 23 years of living under this tree, I have only seen such a high yield of acorns one other year—in 2012. Yearly acorn yields are widely variable. Some years the nuts are few and small. This year, at least on some trees, the nuts are numerous and large. The yield of acorns from an oak tree is called “mast.” Biologists call a large yielding year for tree nuts a “mast year.” Oregon white oaks flower in the spring and are wind pollinated. The acorns start forming in the spring and then mature through the summer. They plummet to the ground in the fall. A healthy oak tree, with a large crown can produce more than 20 pounds of nuts in a good year..more than a thousand may fall from one large tree. Some scientists have found that acorn production can be greater if the spring is drier than normal. A wet spring might prohibit oak pollen from flying around in the wind, and fewer seeds set. This year, 2018, we cer- tainly had a much drier spring than normal. The acorns usually germinate in the spring, but if autumn is warm and wet, many may germinate right away. Seedlings that land in a good place to grow quickly develop a deep taproot, with relatively little top growth in the first year. Forming a good root system before many leaves helps seedlings to survive the an- nual summer drought we usually get. Slower growing than most of our deciduous spe- cies, white oaks don’t produce acorn crops until they are about 20 years old. Some of the Willamette Valley’s majestic giant oaks are several hundred years old and probably predate the arrival of Euro-Americans. Site conditions where oaks grow heavily influence how fast and large a tree will grow. In optimal condi- tions, a 100-year old oak tree may grow higher than 80 feet. On poor sites, an oak of the same age may only be 25 feet tall. The oldest individuals our regions are thought to be about 500 years old. Acorns are important food for many birds and mammals, acorns feed jays, acorn woodpeckers, deer and western gray squirrels. I wonder if we will see a boom in species that eat acorns, following this mast year production of acorns. Our majestic native oaks provide important habitat for wildlife as well. More than 100 other native species, including many migratory songbirds use them for nesting, foraging or shelter. Acorns aren’t the only way that oaks can reproduce. New trees can sprout from the roots, trunks or even stumps, as well. Scientists say that most oak trees in Oregon have grown from sprouts rather than acorns. Injury or fire stimulates oaks to sprout. Oregon white oak was way more plentiful in our re- gion before EuroAmericans arrived. 3. Filing Date: 9-21-18 4. Issue Frequency: Weekly 5. Number of Issues Published Annually: 52 6. Extent and Nature of Circulation: Oregon White Oak trees STATESMAN JOURNAL FILE These trees were once common on a wide range of soils and topographic conditions—from dry, rocky hill- sides to floodplain lowlands. Ecologists have estimated that more than 500,000 acres of oak prairie savanna covered the region prior to 1850. Native American set fires regularly in the dry season, which favored fire-resistant old oaks. Today, because of modern settlement activities, less than 10 percent of the original acreage of oak savannah re- mains. Now, oaks are usually out-competed on good qual- ity sites by faster-growing trees. In our area, Douglas fir and big leaf maple is particularly good and shading out former oak woodlands. In my neighborhood woods, it is a common sight to see dead or dying oaks being shaded out beneath a Douglas fir and maple can- opy. Across much of its range (from British Columbia into northern California), Oregon white oak is now re- stricted to locations too dry in summer or too wet in winter for most other trees. Do you have Oregon white oaks? Clackamas County has put out a guide for oak care and protection called Conserving Oregon White Oak in Urban and Suburban Landscapes, available online at https://conservation- district.org/?wpfb_dl=557 Carol Savonen is a naturalist and writer.
