JEFFREY M. SMITH/TIMES HERALD How to harvest seeds from your annuals Gardening Carol Savonen Guest columnist Question: I have a wonderful group of marigolds and would like to save the seeds for next year. What should I do after I pull off the 'deadhead'? Answer: By “deadhead” I assume you mean the old flowering head, which by now has mature seeds. After you make sure there are mature seeds, pull them off the flower heads. Do this when it hasn’t been raining, as moisture may encourage the seeds to rot. I keep my flower seeds in an envelope. Make sure to label them with type and year. Keep the envelope in a cool, dry area until next year. If you save several types of seeds, you can store them in envelopes in a glass jar in the refrigerator. Put some powdered milk in the bottom. It acts as a des- iccant; it keeps the seeds dry so they will last longer. You can save seeds from lots of other annuals as well. I’ve successfully saved seed from cosmos, nicoti- ana, annual larkspur, nasturtium, poppies, pansies, zinnias and others. Question: I have some gladioli that need trans- planting. I have successfully left them in the ground over winter for the last two years. I am not good at keeping dug up bulbs over the winter. When should I transplant them, this fall or wait until spring? At pre- sent they are starting to turn a little yellow. Thank you. Answer: I’d dig your gladioli up before the first frost. Cut off the leaves and put the bulbs in sawdust over the winter. Replant them in your new location in the spring. Glads are somewhat tender. You can trans- plant them now, but they are “done” for the year. They’ll grow better if planted next spring and you’ll avoid freezing and killing them if we have a cold win- ter. Question: This summer I noticed that my pear tree leaves were full of skeletonized areas...only the veins and membrane remains in these spots. No green tissue left in the spots at all. Upon closer investigation of the leaves, I noticed what look like hundreds of little dark colored slugs all over the leaves! What are these? Tree slugs? Answer: It sounds like you are seeing sawfly larvae, also known by some as the “pearslug.” Larvae are dark olive green colored and are covered with slime, so they are easily mistaken for small slugs. Adult sawflies are shiny black wasp-like insects with two pairs of dark wings. Sawflies are related to bees and wasps. There are sometimes two generations of pear sawflies per growing season, so if you noticed these in August, it is probably the second generation you are seeing. Female sawflies have a saw-like ovipositor coming out of their abdomens, which they use to deposit eggs in leaves. Pear sawflies also are pests on cherry, apri- cot, cotoneaster, hawthorn, mountain ash, prune and quince trees. Sawflies rarely harm healthy trees. Parasitic wasps, birds and other natural predators normally keep them in check. You might try spraying your pear tree with insecticidal soap. The larvae can be washed from plants with a sharp stream of water.
