DICK WASSON/SPECIAL TO THE STATESMAN JOURNAL Optimist Continued from Page 1B There you will find topics such as harmful algae bloom advisories, beach advisories (or what we in the media refer to euphemistically as “poop alerts”), and fish and shellfish advisories. The term poop alert gets its name because those are warnings to avoid water contact because of elevated levels of, almost always, fecal bacteria. Under each of the topics are links to information about individual advisories, such as algae alerts for Cullaby and Upper Klamath lakes, Willow Creek Res- ervoir as well as parts of the South Umpqua River. Ocean sampling is done during the summer recrea- tion season – Memorial Day through Labor Day – and under the beach advisories topic, there is a link to a list of sampling sites. The fish and shellfish advisories section has the current status of shellfish closures (click on the link to “ODA Shellfish Safety Closures” as well information about consumption advisories by water bodies and Dahl species for both fish and shellfish. One of the benefits about having all of the links on one page is you can cross check for, say, shellfish clo- sures (mussel gathering is open!!! Yay) as well as poop, ahem, beach advisories (mussels are open, but the place where I was going says stay out of the water! Boo). It’s only happened to me once (shellfish open, water closed), but it was a 1 1/2-hour drive each way. Poop indeed. Now about the other stops when planning your out- ing: Check the “Alerts” link on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife website, https://myodfw.com/ for the latest changes in regulations. And to check on the status of fires in Oregon, go to https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ then type in “Oregon” in the search box in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Happy trails! Henry Miller is a retired Statesman Journal outdoor columnist and outdoor writer. You can contact him via email at HenryMillerSJ@gmail.com “The coaching staff has really bought into everyone, not just the scholarship guys, they give their all for the walk-on guys as well,” Dahl said. “It’s just a really amazing experience. Every opportunity I get, I try to make the most of it.” Continued from Page 1B Brooks-James is the starter, and the other backs will rotate in on a situational basis. As the only walk-on running back on Oregon’s ros- ter, Dahl understands and embraces his role on the team. “It’s hard to get all the guys playing time, so my goal is to just to make the most of the opportunities I get,” Dahl said. “But I also want to use my skills and my tal- ent to make the other guys better, even if I’m not play- ing.” The Ducks open the season at 5 p.m. Saturday against Bowling Green at Autzen Stadium.
